FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
October 12/04
Montreal recording artist Norman Nawrocki tours his newest show: 'Beats,
strings & brain food - for revolt, against Empire' .
After 18 years & 18 albums with all his bands (like the legendary Rhythm
Activism, Bakunin's Bum and DaZoque!), Montreal's primo anarcho
violinist/cabaret artist, Norman Nawrocki brings his newest, exciting solo
music show to Vancouver's El Colcal Bar/Restaurant, on Friday Oct 22nd.
The show is based on his new CD 'Duck Work,' a beat-rich, musically
adventurous, sonic attack against the forces of ignorance, greed &
xenophobia. It offers a powerful, stinging critique of American foreign
policy & their hypocritical 'war on terrorism;' and an upbeat call to
action.
On stage, Nawrocki loops, samples, strums, bows & teases his amplified
violin, and mixes in original beats and other pre-recorded tracks to
create hypnotic, ambient soundscapes for his tall tales, stinging
critiques of world affairs, and his forays into the dreamland of how
things could be different. The result is a high energy, compelling and
topical combo of inventive, live music and engaging, mesmerizing spoken
word. Sometimes funny, always thought-provoking, Nawrocki is described by
The Globe & Mail as "a born showman who never lets his audiences pass a
dull evening,"
'Duck Work' is a 61 minute, incendiary, spoken word CD features Nawrocki
on driving , looped cello, viola, violin & piano and a stellar crew of
other musicians from Montreal's underground, classical, folk, rock & jazz
scenes, on bass, guitars, trumpet, beats & harp. The 14 tracks explore
danceable, 'anarcho house,' celtic punk, Middle Eastern swing, trance,
experimental ska/jazz, & bass-heavy ambient.
Nawrocki is known internationally as frontman/violinist for his many bands
& their tours across North America & Europe. He's also renowned for his
hilarious and raunchy anti-sexist, 'sex-positive,' solo comedy cabarets
('Sex Toys!'; 'My Dick & Other Manly Tales;' 'I Don't Understand Women!;'
'Lessons from a 7ft Penis' ), his poetry & fiction books (like 'The
Anarchist & The Devil Do Cabaret'), his CBC TV and radio work ('Bob the
Talking Payphone'), and his topical and spoken word /live, solo music
performances. He's currently on a 10 city Western Canada tour.
'Duck Work,' is released by Les Pages Noires Productions & distributed by
Winnipeg's G-7 Welcoming Committee Records.
