‘desmedia 2’ (57 mins, 2003) is an ‘oral history’ videotape featuring
conversations with a diverse array of residents and members of the Downtown
Eastside community. The people taped have contributed to the vitality and history of
the Carnegie Centre as well as the larger neighbourhood, they include
organizational staff and volunteers, people off and on the street, in the parks, and
those who came to our weekly workshops at the Carnegie, Oppenheimer Park, and
elsewhere in the DTES. The participants of the workshops and members of
desmedia recorded footage for this project since the beginning of 2001, and
continued until the summer of 2003. It is our second videotape about the area. The
videotape had its premiere at the Carnegie Centre theatre in September 2003 as
part of the Carnegie anniversary project. This is the second time it will be
screened.

The desmedia collective is a group of four artists committed to working on
engaged, collaborative art projects with other residents and members of the
community. All of our projects/workshops are run on a volunteer basis and are
free to participants, all materials and equipment are provided. The objective
of the collective is to provide opportunities for the productive possibilities
of self-expression, self-reflection and self-representation. The workshops
themselves utilize painting, installation, video, photography and related
media inside an atmosphere of facilitation and support provided by the collective.
They are an integral part of our practice exploring various ways of
documenting lives and histories as well as giving evidence to and providing a venue for
the vitality and creativity of members of the community. The works produced
and the process employed in production is reflective of the participants (and
collective) and brings to the forefront the relationship of the individual
and a larger social body.
