Naomi Klein, author of NO LOGO & Avi Lewis, former host of CBC's COUNTERSPIN,
in Vancouver with the BC premiere of their feature film,
The Take
Tuesday May 25, 8:00 pm / Vogue Theatre, 918 Granville Street
The Take follows the story of workers as they take back factories abandoned by
multinational corporations after the collapse of Argentina's economy.
Director/producer Avi Lewis and writer/producer Naomi Klein take us deep
inside the lives of ordinary visionaries, as they reclaim their work, their
dignity, and their democracy.
Join Klein and Lewis at DOXA Documentary Film and Video Festival for this Opening
Night Gala Fundraiser.
"We're delighted to be bringing our first film to such an energetic, young
festival: it's a great fit. DOXA is riding a wave of renewed excitement about
political documentaries, while staying rooted in Vancouver's legendary
doc scene. This is the perfect moment, and the perfect home for The Take's
west coast premiere." Avi Lewis
"We made this film to answer a question that we were hearing from our critics, and
were starting to ask ourselves in the context of the globalization debate:
'we know what you're against, but what are you for?' But it's not a lecture or
diatribe. It's a story with tears and tear gas, street-corner democracy and
recovered dignity; groups of people fighting back against an unjust
system, and winning." Naomi Klein
"The Take is set in the globalized ghost town of communities abandoned by
corporations that scour the globe for the cheapest labour and fattest
corporate welfare cheques. The town of Port Alice, facing the closure of its
pulp mill, is facing exactly this fate - as are so many others in B.C. Our film
is a portrait of working people taking back their jobs and their daily
dignity from the powerful forces driving globalization. It's set in
Argentina, but we made it to bring a little hope, and maybe even some concrete
radical ideas, to all the Port Alices of the world." Avi Lewis
Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film!
