A multi-media report-back from photojournalist and co-author Andrew
Stern who was working in Iraq with Naomi Klein, (author of No Logo),
grassroots organizer and co-author Jennifer Whitney, who participated
in the popular uprising in Argentina and organized the shut down of the
WTO in Seattle, along with filmmaker David Martinez and British
activist Jo Wildings who also recently returned from Iraq where they
were kidnapped by the resistance and released unharmed.
We Are Everywhere: the irresistible rise of global anticapitalism was
described by Canadian writer Naomi Klein as “...the first book to truly
capture and embody the exuberant creativity and radical intellect of
the protest movements.” Two of the book’s co-producers, author Jennifer
Whitney and photojournalist Andrew Stern, along with filmmaker David
Martinez, are traveling throughout the US in order to present not only
the book, but also the results of their further research and
investigation into international protest movements and their ties to
the growing anti-war movement. Stern and Martinez are just back from
their second trip to Iraq, and will present hard-hitting images and
video from the streets of Baghdad and Fallujah to accompany Whitney’s
analysis. The presentation is a multimedia performance comprised of
several elements: a slideshow and video from the current uprising in
Iraq, a video highlighting the diversity of various threads of
resistance around the world, an exhibition of beautiful photos and
illustrative quotations from their book, a brief talk on the current
situation in Iraq and the connections between the anti-war movements
and the global anticapitalist movements covered in We Are Everywhere,
and an open discussion with the audience.

3. Wednesday May 26 Film screening at Video Inn 1965 Main Street ($5-10)

7pm: Mainzer Street (English with German subtitles, 90 min.)

Squatters, Gays, Lesbians Fight the Nazis and Cops! A documentary about
a squat in East Berlin in 1990 that skillfully weaves together issues
of housing shortage, xenophobia, patriarchy and capitalism. It examines
housing shortages in Berlin both before and after the fall of the
Berlin Wall and the efforts of a group of squatters to find homes on
Mainzer Street. Squatters talk about their experiences in specific
houses and projects, such as the Lesbian-Wimmin's House, the
FairyGayMen's House, the people's kitchen, and a street festival. The
film then shows their struggle to protect these advances from
politicians, neo-nazis, and police. This is a great film about
squatting in Berlin. It is a great and honest analysis of how people
seek to build new structures of living and the pressures they face.

9pm: Born in Flames (Directed by Lizzie Borden)

Feminist classic BORN IN FLAMES is the futuristic tale of the turmoil
that still brews years after a "peaceful" social revolution. Thwarted
by a system which rejects its minorities, a group of women band
together in an effort to gain control of the state owned media. With
humor and style, the film combines the many cadences of the women's
movement - militant, moderate, hip hop rap, punk cool - to suggest the
possibility of a unified voice.
