MAY 5 -- The transsexual/transgendered communities in Canada have begun to organize and trans issues are starting to appear on the national queer radar. The various issues faced by transsexual and transgendered individuals often intersect with those issues faced by lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals. There are also unique issues faced by trans-identified individuals that nevertheless should be of concern and interest to the glb community. May 3rd - 11th is Trans Awareness Week in Canada and is an informal network of various local and regional events organized around trans issues. One of the primary organizers of Trans Awareness Week (TAW) has been Tami Starlight, a trans activist in Vancouver BC who recently joined the Board of Directors of Egale Canada as the BC/Yukon Rep (female). We will be talking to her from her home in Vancouver about TAW and some of the issues currently facing transsexuals, transgendered, and two-spirited individuals both within the gay, lesbian and bi communities and outside those communities.
MAY 19 -- As of this writing, the Prime Minister has yet to call a federal election, although the call is expected any time soon, possibly within the next week. Local gay activist, Keith Purdy, is running as the NDP candidate for the federal riding of Calgary South Centre, a large new riding encompassing much of central and south Calgary. Alberta, historically, has not been fertile ground for leftist or left-leaning political thought and running as an NDP candidate in Alberta has some unique challenges. We will be speaking with Keith about being an Alberta NDPer and some of the issues he hopes to address during his campaign.
Speak Sebastian has been broadcasting over CJSW FM 90.9 since 1990. Speak Sebastian is always looking for show ideas, people to interview, projects to help promote, and events to be placed on Calgary's most complete community events calendar, The Homo File, broadcast at the end of each show. For more information, or to "pitch" a show idea, contact Stephen Lock at stlock at nucleus.com or phone 708-5302(cell).
