Volunteer with Grassroots Women!
Grassroots Women is a Vancouver based women's organization with links
nationally and internationally. Through educating, organizing, and
mobilizing, we seek to address the systemic political and economic
marginalization of working class women caused by imperialism.
We are always looking for new volunteers / organizers who want to contribute
existing skills as well as develop new skills (including computer skills,
facilitation, public speaking, graphic design, participatory research);
deepen their understanding of the experiences and issues of marginalized and
working class women; and, help build a democratic and anti-imperialist
women's movement.
We are holding a volunteer orientation session on Wednesday, March 31, at
6:30pm. We hope you can make it!
Volunteers can get involved with one of our three committees or with general
organizational work:
1)Childcare Committee:
Only 8.4% of children who need childcare have access to it. The recent cuts
to childcare in British Columbia will only make things worse for
marginalized women. For over a decade now, the federal government has been
using the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) as an answer to the childcare
crisis in Canada; yet, this is available only to middle and upper middle
class Canadians and violates all principles of human rights for workers
under the LCP. Grassroots Women organizes forums, workshops, focus groups,
and is conducting a postcard campaign to call for the scrapping of the LCP
and for a universal national childcare program.
2)Health Committee:
Health is increasingly privatized. Not only health services, but our
illnesses and even our bodies are being used for massive profits. For the
majority of exploited and oppressed peoples, health is increasingly out of
our reach. Grassroots Women organizes forums, workshops and rallies to speak
out against privatization of health and for health for all.
3)Labour Committee:
Working class women wind up working in the most dangerous, dirty, and
difficult jobs at the cheapest wages. Policies of imperialist globalization
are being implemented to cheapen the costs of our labour. Cheap labour
policies include the $6 / hour training wage; "flexible" work which forces
women into only casual and short term work; and changes to employment
standards. Immigrant and migrant women are the hardest hit as immigration
policies are used to bring in workers with temporary and unstable status.
Grassroots Women organizes focus groups, forums, and publishes educational
materials to organize with working class women against cheap labour
policies.
To attend the volunteer orientation session or to see how you can involved,
