Anti-Canada Day March in Solidarity with Kanehsatake

Where:
Phillips Square, Montreal

When:
Thursday, 1st of July 2004 from 1:00 PM until approximately 3:00 AM

Cost: FREE

This July 1st, 2004, in solidarity with the 284-year struggle against
colonialism by the Mohawk Peoples of Kanehsatake, Montrealers will take to
the streets en masse demanding Quebec and Canada stop interferring in the
Nation's sovereign affairs. Against the flow of status-quo Canada Day
celebrations*, this demonstration will highlight Canada’s ongoing
colonial relations with the Mohawk Nation of Kanehsatake, and expose
Canada’s designs for the cultural genocide of
Indigenous Peoples nationwide.

We will march for the repeal of the federal government's Bill S-24 & the
Kanesatake Tripartite Policing Agreement. We will march until genocide is
no longer committed in our names. We are marching for Canadian
Decolonization Now!

Anti-Canada Day March in Solidarity with Kanehsatake
When? July 1st, 2004, 1pm sharp
Where? Square Phillips, Union Ave. & Ste-Catherine
Metro? Metro McGill, Union exit

For the past 6 months, since January 12th, 2004, the Peoples of Kanehsatake have
successfully resisted a federally sponsored, politically-motivated,
militarized invasion of their community. They have put their lives and
freedom on the line in order to stop the formation of a police-state headed by
Grand Chief James Gabriel, whose leadership itself was imposed through a
federal court injunction. Twenty-four
Kanehsatake community members face charges of participation in a riot and forcible
confinement of police officers. The threat of prison has not deterred their
resistance. The struggle for self-determination in Kanehsatake is far
from over and the Mohawk community is asking for your support.

In response, a newly formed coalition has organized a march leading directly
to the doorsteps of state and corporate officials responsible for creating
the current crisis in Kanehsatake.

Gabriel’s high priced PR firm - Communication & Strategie - have spun the crisis in
the media as a confrontation between law enforcement and organized crime
deliberately to distract attention from alliances built between Canada,
Quebec & Gabriel in a conspiracy to render Kanehsatake a bankrupted
municipality - ripe for non-native settlement, development and niobium
mining.

Gabriel stated publicly, he needs his police in Kanehsatake in order to “cut the head
off his opposition” in the community. This head count includes three duly
elected Band Councillors who Canada and Quebec have systematically
excluded from all negotiations and deal-making.

In solidarity with the Peoples of Kanehsatake, we will hold our government
responsible for their illicit deal-making, awarding of funds and armed
incursions into the community. In solidarity, we will stand
shoulder-to-shoulder with peoples defending their community from armed
incursions to help prevent bloodshed and bear witness to the truth.

Donations of non-perishable foods, and money for the legal fund are needed. For more
information, email: ipsm at resist.ca

* Canada Day officially commemorates the July 1, 1867 passing of the British
North American Act (BNA) which created the Dominion of Canada. The BNA
stipulated Canadian governments would have to adhere to British
legislation, including the 1763 Royal Proclamation.

The Royal Proclamation specified nation-to-nation treaties would be the only
means by which the Crown could obtain title to Indigenous-held
territories, thus protecting Native Sovereignty and enshrining Canada’s
fiduciary obligations to Indigenous Peoples.

Obviously, Canada has not honored their obligations. Instead the government created
the most elaborate, systematized, organized criminal organization this
country has ever known - the Department of Indian Affairs - to expropriate
Indigenous lands and resources through legislation passed in breach of the
Royal Proclamation.
