An antispeciesist campground for the animal equality

Where:
Le Collet-de Dèze

When:
Saturday, 28th of August 2004 from 1:00 AM until approximately 1:00 AM

An antispeciesist campground for the animal equality

In Collet de Dèze (Lozère)

>From August the 28th until September the 5th

This will be the opportunity to meet, talk, exchange, discuss, and share some
time in a nice spot.

>From August the 28th until September the 5th a campground against speciesism
& for the animal equality will occur in Lozère. Speciesism is an
arbitrary discrimination based on the belonging to different specie from
the human. This is an ideology of domination that lets dominants – humans in
this case – exploit, torture & kill animals for their pleasure. Racism
used to be - & still is – an excuse for the exploitation of other peoples
& for the differences of treatment based on the colour of the skin of the
culture &/ or of the nationality. Sexism justifies the control of men
over women using the excuse of physical &/ or intellectual differences
to treat them as lower. Speciesism – using the excuse of specie – justifies
the fact of not considering animals or only as a commodity & to subject
them to the worst tortures & humiliations for the human pleasure.

To fight against this oppression, & all the other, is the duty of the
antispeciesist movement for the animal equality.

This campground will give us the opportunity to talk & exchange about
several topics such as antispeciesism, animal equality, the status given
to animals in our society, etc
& this will also give us the chance to meet
& live together during a week, to share our experiences, our lives in a
nice spot. We want this gathering to be warm & friendly. Depending on the
desire of everyone, some workshops will be organized. The most important is
to share our experiences & to gather around the same struggles.

No endless lectures, no discussions from so called “specialists” & no
military schedules! This campground will be organized with the people who
take part to it in a self-managed way. Decisions will be taken all together,
meals prepared by everyone & the prices will be based on pay what you can system.

All welcome! No matter if you are an antispeciesist or an inquiring mind join us
to share & exchange during this week.

Functioning

The root is self-management, this running mode where everyone puts a lot in the
organization (making decisions, preparing the meals, shopping, etc
) We
don’t want any organizer. Everyone is or none is! i.e. that preparing meals
(vegan) & washing dishes will be done all together, each in turn. The
price of the meals is on a pay what you can system so everyone can give what s/he
can afford.

Discussions

(One every day, morning or evening)

ð Who are the antispeciesists?

Discussion to characterize ourselves as antispeciesists for the animal equality, to
define our differences, our convergences with the animal welfare/ rights
movements, but also with the libertarians. It would be a way to understand
our paths so we could establish what we are sharing, our differences &
our future.

ð The antispeciesist memory

“I’m working as an archivist & I’m involved in the record of immigrant
societies & activists (that’s the short story). I’d like us to think
about the significance of keeping & exposing our archives.

The discussion would be about the usefulness of keeping our archives (posters,
flyers, etc
) to improve our activism (sharing, not repeating the same
work, etc
) & to save our reports (what would help to understand each
other, to see the evolutions, etc
).

ð Sexism & antispeciesism: the exploitation deep in the flesh!

The body of an animal & of a woman often are reified, reduced to the status of
things or meat. Both consumption goods is it acceptable to make a comparison
between the two of them? Is it based on the same logic?

ð Antispeciesism & domestication

Can domestication help animals? In a certain way domestication can help people
to know the animal better (then to respect him/her), but how could it bring
them to consider him/her as an individual when its roots should be changed!

This discussion will be a way to come to talk about the divergences between
antispeciesists, those who are against the domestication of animals,
which always brings to a domination, even if it is really small; & those
who’d rather take care of an animal than letting him/her suffer &/or die.

This discussion makes us wonder: can one really be an antispeciesist in a society
that is not?

ð Appraisal of actions & projects

The time to take stock of the past antispeciesist actions (local &
national) & to talk about new plans.

Workshops

ð Self-defence for women

ð Advices to talk in front of an audience

Activities

Swimming, hiking, & do not hesitate to bring rackets, parlour games, music
(instruments, tapes, etc
), balls, etc

The campground is in Collet-de Dèze, a village with 700 inhabitants; it is close
to the river of Gardon, in the middle of les Sévennes. There are grocery shops
pretty close to the campground.

If you come by train, the easiest way is to stop in Alès qui is 30 km south east,
then you need to take a bus that will take you to the village.

If you come by car, the N106 is really close to Collet-de Dèze.
