Korea, US Militarism and the Danger of War in East Asia:
A forum and discussion with special guest speaker Suh Sung

Sunday, January 25, 2004, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Location: Maritime Labour Centre (111 Victoria Drive at Triumph)

Professor Suh is the co-convenor of the International Symposium for
Human Rights and Peace in East Asia, one of the most influential
peace organizations in that region at the present time. He spent 19
years in prison under authoritarian South Korean regimes, from 1971
to 1990.

Born in Japan of Korean descent, Sung graduated from the Tokyo
University of Education in 1968 and did graduate studies at Seoul
National University where he became active in Korea's early democracy
movement. In the spring of 1971, the Korean military police abducted
him and his brother and falsely charged him with being part of
a "campus spy ring." The overturning of Korea's authoritarian regime
in the late 1980s led to his release in 1990 and he was granted a
full pardon by recently retired South Korean president Kim Daejung.

Since his release, Sung has been a tireless advocate for other
victims of state terrorism and an active campaigner for peace. He
was appointed professor of comparative human rights in the law
faculty at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan in 1998 and is
currently staying in Canada as the Lansdowne fellow of the Humanities
Centre, University of Victoria.
