Temporary Replacement
This is a temporary replacement position scheduled at 35 hours per week, included in the Canadian Union of Pubic Employees (CUPE) Local 2396 at a wage rate of $23.74 per hour.
Start date: as soon as possible.
Expected termination: May 1st, 2004, with possible extension.

Description:
The Resource Coordinator-Communications is primarily responsible for coordinating the communications work of the Society, including materials design and production, media liaison, public relations strategies, planning and projects. Also, the Resource Coordinator-Communications assists in the administration of the Society's Resource office, its systems, records, and activities, and provides advice and support to the elected officials of the Society.
Goal:
To coordinate and deliver clear, coherent and comprehensive communications work for the Society which complement its goals, activities, and positions, which engages and informs the membership, the University, other groups and individuals at large, and which includes work through news media outlets and organizations.
Working Relationships / Role in Organizational Structure:
The Resource Coordinator- Communications works closely with the Resource Coordinator-Research & Policy, as well as the Student Union Organizer and Graduate Issues & University Relations Coordinator in the Society's Advocacy area. The Resource Coordinator-Communications reports to the Executive Committee and to the Board of Directors.
The Resource Coordinator-Communications serves as a non-voting member of the Executive Committee and Commercial Services Committee, and attends all meetings of the Board of Directors. The Resource Coordinator-Communications acts as a primary advisor and resource person to elected officials of the Society on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
Duties and Responsibilities
Communications:
1. Assist, support, counsel and advise the Executive Officers, Board of Directors and committees of the Society
2. Coordinate and undertake the production of all of the Society's communications materials in a high quality and consistent manner, including media releases, newsletters, posters, leaflets and brochures, print media advertisements, promotional materials, business cards, letterhead and other materials as required
3. Directly assist elected officials with media liaison work and communications strategies, including coordinating strategic communications planning
4. Maintain extensive and up-to-date media contact and knowledge of media and communications activities and trends
5. In conjunction with elected officials, Society committees and staff, initiate, coordinate and execute communications and organizational support for programs, services, activities and special projects to promote the goals and interests of the Society, and issues of importance to the membership
6. Maintain and coordinate the Society's website, including producing, revising, and organizing content and other on-line resources, in a timely and well designed manner
7. Coordinate and oversee the timely, effective, and efficient production and delivery of the Society's annual student handbook in a high quality manner, including supervising temporary staff with respect to the sale of advertising
8. Assist the Graduate Issues Officer and the Graduate Issues Committee with the graphics design, layout and copy editing of the Graduate Bulletin
General:
1. Act as a primary resource person for Society committees, including distributing agendas, materials, taking minutes, and producing reports
2. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the Society, its structures, priorities, policies, agreements, contracts events and activities
3. Work to ensure the Society's goals, interests, and direction are maintained and advanced; and maintain the confidentiality of the Society's records, activities and affairs
4. Assist in the research and policy work of the Society with the Resource Coordinator-Research & Policy
5. Administer, with the Resource Coordinator-Research & Policy, the Society's Resource Office, including maintaining records, Society email lists, filing systems, resource materials, and equipment
6. Prepare, with the Resource Coordinator-Research & Policy, the annual budget submission for the Resource Office for consideration by the Finance and Administrative Services committee
7. Provide input on the operations and activities of the Resource Office, its functions and programs
8. Work with Executive Officers, members of the Board, staff and volunteers to develop programs, activities, and events that address issues of concern to the membership
Required Skills and Experience
1. Excellent communications skills, including written, verbal, critical, and strategic
2. Skills and experience with media communications, including media strategies, media liaison, and communications messaging
3. Skills and experience in broad communications media, including visual, electronic, graphic design and website
4. Computing skills (including Adobe In Design, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Freehand, Quark Express, word processing, spreadsheet, and database software)
5. Broad knowledge of and experience with the issues and regulatory environment pertaining to post-secondary education
6. Knowledge of university policies, procedures and governing structures
7. Knowledge of post-secondary student organizations' structure and mandate
8. Ability to take verbatim minutes, compile records, and produce meeting reports and related documents
9. Ability to work in a demanding, self-supervisory, multi-task environment, within clear timelines
10. Strong interpersonal skills
11. Some research and policy making skills and experience
