"NEW PETE SEEGER" David Rovics TO SING AT WISE HALL
Hailed as "the new Pete Seeger", folk singer/activist
David Rovics will be bringing his powerful blend of
humour and biting political commentary to the WISE
Hall on Friday, February 20. The show is sponsored by
StopWar.ca.
Sing Out magazine says Rovics' "songs and live banter
do not tiptoe around sensibilities. It's for those
who love the art of using song to voicepolitical and
social dissent. Targets include the IMF, sanctions,
smartbombs, genetic engineers and Georgia's infamous
School of the Americas where the US trained South
American guerrillas."
Rovics himself says, "I believe music can be more than
an escape. It can be that, yes, fine, but it can also
be a hammer, to paraphrase Bertoldt Brecht. It can be
a tool for selling products on the one hand, or part
of the stockpile of ideas and knowledge necessary to
build and maintain a social movement." Since the
mid-90's Rovics has spent most of his time on tour,
playing concerts and rallies around the US, Canada and
various countries in Europe, "to protest against the
imperialist war-mongers, corporate globalizers,
schools of torture, etc."
He's shared the stage with many leading activists
including Amy Goodman, Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky,
Ralph Nader, DennisKucinich, Angela Davis, Danny
Glover, Desmond Tutu, Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon,
Jello Biafra, Pete Seeger, Billy Bragg, Bruce
Cockburn, the IndigoGirls, and others.
To find out more visit Rovics website,
http://www.davidrovics.com.
Rovics will do two sets, each preceded by performances
from some of the Lower Mainland's finest spoken word
artists and singers. These folks will make you proud
that you live here. They are smart, gutsy, rude, no
holds barred and funny -- Allen Ginsberg meets Lenny
Bruce. They'll knock your socks off.
Come and have a great evening, 8:00 pm on, at one of
Vancouver's premier music venues, the WISE Hall, 1882
Adanac (behind the Vancouver East Cultural Centre),
Friday February 20, 2004.
Tickets at the door ($10, $5).
