Raising our voices... Reclaiming our space
Anti-Violence Week is Februrary 23rd to 27th and there are events for
everyone!!!!
All week come by the Student Union Building at the University of British
Columbia to see interactive and informative displays. Meet people from
safety resource groups and activist organisations who are working to
make the world a safer place. Displays will include The Vagina
Monologues, Options for Sexual Health, Grassroots Women, Safe Together
at UBC and many more. Play some games and win candy!!!! See the 2 new
SASC campaigns (complete with beautiful pins for your backpack). On
Thursday come to the self-defense demo, and on Friday move your body
with a stretching workshop or dance lessons. You can sign up for
workshops and get your pledge form for the SASC Groove-A-Thon at our
events table. Come check us out!
Register for The Clothesline Project workshops on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday. Survivors of violence, as well as families and friends, are
invited to come and create t-shirts. Please contact sasc at ams.ubc.ca or
come by the event table to register or get more information.
Wednesday we're going to Take Back the Night! Meet at the Goddess of
Democracy at 6pm for a rally with amazing speakers. After the march
there will also be a vigil. Men are invited to participate in the rally
and vigil, while women (women identified) and their children are
encouraged to attend the march as well. The march will be a great
chance for women to walk together while chanting, singing, and listening
to some great tunes!!! Noisemakers and signs are highly encouraged!
Thursday night join the V-Day performers for Vaginapalooza in the
Gallery Lounge in the SUB. The coffee house begins at 7:30 and will
feature different performers. For more information (or if you want to
be one of the folks on stage!) contact vday at ams.ubc.ca
And to end an amazing week, join us for the first (but not last) SASC
Groove-A-Thon! We're not selling tickets... instead pick up a pledge
form and get other people to pay you to groooooove to spoken word and
tons of live music. There will be acoustic sets as well as bands
Bernie, Problems of Style and Virgin in Hollywood. Doors open at 7PM
and music is until 11PM. There will be coffee, yummy baked treats, an
awesome mocktail bar and silent auction. Bring your kids to this
all-ages show, or just be a kid when you play Go Fishing. If you
couldn't get your hands on a pledge form, you can still come with a
donation at the door. This is the SASC's big fundraiser for this year,
so come on out and have a blast!
The Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC) is a partnership between Women
Against Violence Against Women and the Alma Mater Society of UBC. For
more information about our services or these events, please call
