Call for Participation: Media Democracy programming
at the Northwest Social Forum, Oct 14-17, Seattle
NEXT PLANNING MEETING: Thurs.Aug. 26, 7pm @ 911 Media Arts, Seattle
EMAIL SIGNUP: http://lists.nwsocialforum.org/lists/info/mediademocracy
Dear friends,
The Northwest Social Forum (www.nwsocialforum.org) is coming soon, and
MEDIA is one of the numerous themes that participants wil be focusing on at
this broad-based, multicultural event. Media makers, activists, independent
journalists, watchdogs, culture jammers, community broadcasters, political
artists, poets and pirates are invited to come from across the Northwest to
help plan workshops and other events. Together let's envision and create a
post-Bush media landscape. ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE, and ANOTHER MEDIA IS
POSSIBLE.
Some organizations are already planning workshops on local cable
organizing, media literacy and low-power FM. There is interest in other
topics, including communications rights, media justice, media diversity and
independent media, to name a few. Others may not have a particular plan of
their own, but want to offer their creative collaboration.
Our next meeting: Groups planning media democracy events for the NWSF will
hold our next planning meeting on Thurs. Aug.26, 7pm, at 911 Media Arts
(www.911media.org) in Seattle. At this working meeting: we will share and
discuss concrete proposals for workshops, lectures and other events, share
resources, discuss collaborations and funding possibilities, and hopefully
emerge with some idea of what our media democracy summit or programming
track might look like within the larger social forum.
Program proposals: The NWSF workshop application deadline is Friday, Sept.
10. Download the form at
www.reclaimthemedia.org/toolkit/NSWFworkshopproposal.pdf. In order for us
to coordinate our media democracy planning together, please share your
programming ideas with us as well. Write up your idea for a workshop,
lecture, film screening or other event, along with the resources you can
provide or would need provided. Be as detailed as possible, but incomplete
ideas, brainstormed speaker lists, or invitations for collaboration are
certainly welcome. Please prepare for the Aug. 26 meeting by sending your
group's ideas to our email list (join the list at
http://lists.nwsocialforum.org/lists/info/mediademocracy).
To our friends from Alaska, BC, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and eastern
Washington--please send your proposals to the email list before the meeting
on the 26th. We especially want to welcome folks planning to attend the
Social Forum from outside western Washington.
Please get in touch with any questions you may have!

PS: this media planning group is not handling press outreach or publicity
for the NWSF as a whole. If you are interested in helping with publicity,
please get in touch with Laura McLeod through the NSWF office (206-448-7348
x 342). Also, to date there is no organization planning to host an onsite
media center with computers and Internet access. We hope one or more
organizations will step forward to take this on!
