RALLY AND VIGIL FOR 11th PANCHEN LAMA OF TIBET
Where:
Consulate of the Peoples Republic of China, 3380 Granville Street (Near 16th)
When:
Sunday, 25th of April 2004 from 2:00 PM until approximately 3:00 PM
In May 1995, the Chinese government kidnapped 6 year-old Gedhun Choekyi
Nyima, the boy identified by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen
Lama. Today, the Chinese government continues to insist that the boy and his
family are in protective custody. While the Dalai Lama and his government
in exile, as well as the international community have attempted to locate
and visit the Panchen Lama, not one international agency or human rights
organization has been allowed to meet with him or his family.
April 25, 2004, marks the 15th birthday of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen
Lama. He has spent over half his young life in custody. Members of the Tibetan
community, the Canada Tibet Committee (CTC) and Students For a Free Tibet
will gather to commemorate his birthday, and call for his immediate release
from Chinas custody.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama who continues his Canadian tour in Toronto after
meeting Prime Minister Paul Martin today, has this to say about Gedhun
Choekyi Nyima:
<i>
"The safety of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his proper religious training is of
particular concern for me. I, therefore, appeal to all governments,
religious and human rights organizations for their intervention in
ensuring the safety and freedom of the young Panchen Lama."</i>
