AFFLUENZA - the all consuming epidemic

On Wednesday May 5th the Work Less Party in association with Indymedia and
SFPIRG will be bringing the highly acclaimed author and film producer
John de Graaf to Vancouver for a screening of his film 'Affluenza', and a
discussion of this pervasive modern disease in an age when "the urge to
splurge continues to surge."

Affluenza is about the personal, social, economic, and environmental costs
of over-consumption, and what we can do to beat the "all-consuming bug"
that's infecting the planet. While many people think the fight against
affluenza will require us to "give up" the good life, the authors assert
that we're already giving up the good life by sacrificing personal health
and sanity, family closeness, and ecological stability for electronic
gadgets, fantasy vacations, cheap socks and underwear. Affluenza presents
symptoms (such as Stress of Excess, Family Convulsions, Dilated Pupils);
historical and cultural data; and proven cures. An accessible, even
humorous overview of a difficult subject, Affluenza suggests strategies
for rebuilding families and communities, and for respecting the earth and
its
biological rules.

John de Graaf is the national coordinator of TAKE BACK YOUR TIME DAY,
(see www.timeday.org) and a frequent speaker on issues of overwork and
over-consumption in America. John is the editor of TAKE BACK YOUR TIME and
the co-author of the best-selling AFFLUENZA: THE ALL-CONSUMING EPIDEMIC.
John is also the co-chair of the Public Policy Committee for the
Simplicity Forum, a national think tank for the Voluntary Simplicity
movement. John has worked with KCTS-TV, the Seattle PBS affiliate, for 22
years, as an independent producer of television documentaries. He is the
recipient of more than 100 regional, national and international awards
for film-making. He produced the popular PBS specials, RUNNING OUT OF
TIME, an examination of overwork and time pressure in America, and
AFFLUENZA, a humourous critique of American consumerism. Many of his
programs address environmental subjects, including FOR EARTH'S SAKE: THE
LIFE AND TIMES OF DAVID BROWER, BEYOND
ORGANIC, GREEN PLANS, HOT POTATOES, ESCAPE FROM AFFLUENZA, GENETIC TIME
BOMB, ON NATURE'S TERMS and CIRCLE OF PLENTY. He is also the recipient of
the Founders of a New Northwest Award for his work in environmental media.
