Sacrifice at Cathedral Grove: A Green Monkey Action Report

Join reporter Jane Doe as she climbs 110 feet up a giant cedar to interview a 
teenage tree-sitter. Tour the old-growth forest with environmentalist 
and documentary filmmaker Richard Boyce, and Annette Tanner of the Western 
Canada Wilderness Committee. Listen in as local residents discuss their 
concerns and demands for environmental protection. 

The Green Monkey spent the Easter weekend “embedded” in the protest camp on 
Weyerhaeuser property adjoining Cathedral Grove, between Parksville and 
Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. 

BC Parks has fast-tracked plans for a new parking lot and trail system, to be 
carved from old-growth forest alongside MacMillan Provincial Park. The 
plan would open Cathedral Grove to wind damage and blowdown, destroy 
crucial calving habitat for a rare herd of Roosevelt elk, and contaminate 
drinking water for residents of Qualicum and Dashwood. The province has 
shut the public out of the decision-making process and circumvented 
environmental regulations designed to protect the park.

Local citizens are outraged. They've vowed to defend the trees from the 
chainsaws, even if that means breaking the law. The province is preparing to 
send in the RCMP and arrest anyone who gets in the way of the new parking lot.
