SCREW THE VOTE!
A tongue-in-cheek approach to youth voting in Canada.
According to Elections Canada, barely 25 percent of young electors (aged 18-24)
exercised their right to vote in the 2000 federal election. When Prime
Minister Paul Martin finally calls an election in 2004, will anyone care?
CBC play host Jian Ghomeshi goes on the road to convince that slim minority
that's actually going to the polls they shouldn't bother. Yes even
Ghomeshi, the eternal optimist and political activist, has been silenced.
Why bother fighting it? There's just no point.
Are you 30 or under? If you are we want to hear from you!
The CBC is coming to town as part of their cross-Canada expose on youth voting.
Vancouver area dates include an event in Surrey on April 19th and another at
Robson Square in downtown Vancouver on April 20th.
The Surrey rally will take place at the Tom Binnie Youth Centre on April 19th at 5
pm. In attendance will be the hometown political action group - the Canadian
Democratic Movement.
The Youth Centre can be found at: 10665 135th Street in Surrey BC.
It is only a few minutes walk from the Gateway skytrain station.
The Federal riding of Surrey North was chosen because it has the dubious
distinction of having one of the lowest voter turnouts among youth in all of Canada.
The Vancouver rally will be a 'streeter'. The CBC will be conducting impromptu
questions to youthful passerby at Robson Square on April 20th starting in
the early afternoon.
Whether you are a cut and dried conservative poster child or a raging anarchist - we
WANT to hear from YOU!
