This week on Sound Resistance!...
Joey Only returns with his no-holds-barred, tell-it-like-it-is folk songs. If
anyone personifies the spirit of Sound Resistance!, Joey's the one...
We will also add two fresh, poetic voices from the Gulf Islands. Recorded
live, Rosemary Lindsay and Caroline Barrientos are two women that share an
islander's strength with powerful words.
Rosemary's trilogy is all about being a woman and how that is both given and
learned; she is uproariously funny and shockingly intimate. Caroline's words
reflect a positive self-reflection that is healthy, sincere, and inspirational.
Beginning the show is another instalment from Mumia Abu-Jamal and
www.prisonradio.org; he talks about the eerie parallel between Hitler's
German and Bush's American governments. Finishing the show will be our
weekly events calendar with as many news items as we can fit (see below for
a preview).
Don't miss Sound Resistance!, every Thursday from 1pm to 2pm and only on
Vancouver's Co-op Radio, 102.7 FM, the People's Station!

News Release
We, some of the people and Elders of Cheam, have been voicing concerns
over the development of a ski resort and logging within the Pilalt Territory.
These concerns have fallen on deaf ears.
We cannot sit back any longer and let all of the proposed development plans
to proceed.
As one of our late elders said the mountains are our leaders, the mountains
are our idols, the mountains are our source of food, medicine and
communication, a place for us to pray, and a place of teaching and learning.
Riches are in your qualities for what you could do for your people. These
were more valuable than money or gold.
Logging in Elk Mountain has already started without our consent and has
been going on for approximately four days.
We have tried negotiations, litigation and written notices so far none of these
tactics have worked. It does not matter what we say, governments, and big
corporations go ahead and do what they want even if it means destroying
someone elses life, says June Quipp, elder and former Chief of the Cheam
Nation.
This attitude leaves us no other alternative than to take action to protect what
is rightfully ours. This shameful theft by governments and corporations has to
stop.
Any support is welcome.

The War on SUVs
NEW YORK--What kind of world would it be if someone set your car ablaze
because it guzzled too much fuel? A better one, argues the Earth Liberation
Front, a loosely-organized ecoterrorist organization that spray-painted
environmentalist graffiti such as "gross polluter" and "fat, lazy Americans" on
30 sport utility vehicles at two car dealerships and set fire to a third on Aug.
22. Several SUVs and 20 Hummer H2s were destroyed. On Sept.2, 22 more
SUVs were trashed at a Houston car dealership.
Ecoterrorism expert Bron Taylor of the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh,
says that ELF believes "that ecosystems have an inherent worth that cannot
be judged in relation to human needs, that human actions are bringing the
earth toward mass extinctions, and that political action is insufficient to bring
about the wholesale changes needed."

A B.C. judge has ruled the law prohibiting the possession of marijuana does
not exist.
Provincial court Judge Patrick Chen found the pot possession law went up in
smoke three years ago when Ontario's top appeal court found the law invalid.
Once declared invalid, the law prohibiting pot possession ceased to exist, the
judge concluded.

VANCOUVER - The student society at Simon Fraser University says more
than 1,200 students have agreed to withhold their tuition payments for two
months, to protest higher fees.
----------
September 9, 2003 - The public inquiry into the death of Cree teenager Neil
Stonechild began Monday, September 8, 2003. He is one of three indigenous
men found frozen to death just outside Saskatoon over the past decade. In
all three cases there is strong evidence to suggest that Saskatoon police
officers kidnapped the men and dropped them off on the outskirts of town.
---------
September 2, 2003 - Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) shot and killed a 17
year old member of the Grassy Narrows (Anishnaabe) Nation named
Geronimo Fobister on August 27. The Provincial Police Emergency Repose
Unit and a K9 dog unit tracked down the armed young man and shot and
killed him on a trail.
--------
Since December 3, 2002, the Anishnaabe community of Grassy Narrows
have been blockading a logging road at Slant Lake, 80 km north of Kenora,
Ontario, to prevent logging trucks from entering cut blocks on their traditional
lands. Until the blockade was set up, members of the Grassy Narrows
community had been protesting clear cutting by Abitibi Consolidated through
official channels.
-------
September 1, 2003 - 50 members of the Swan Lake Nation in Manitoba
occupied the band administration office for several days last week over the
misuse of band funds and the improper care of buffalo and elk. The band
members also demanded the resignation of the band administrator and
economic development officer.

August 29th, 2003 - Water Wanted : Round Lake First Nation Delcares State
of Emergency Residents of Round Lake First Nation protested yesterday in a
plea to the Department of Northern and Aboriginal Affairs to do something
about their water supply. More than 800 residents on the fly-in community
located 325 km North of Sioux Lookout, have been without more than one
hour's worth of water for over a week. Chief and council have declared a
state of emergency. Cutbacks to services and design flaws with Round
Lake's water treatment plant have resulted in a "third world" water supply.
High concentrations of micro-organisms and total and dissolved organic
carbon in the lake water are overwhelming the plant's capacity to provide
clean water.

Vancouver has announced that it is opening North America's first safe
injection site, providing a supervised space for drug users to prevent drug-
related harm and reduce overdose deaths, spread of disease, and public
drug use. It is located on Hastings between Main and Columbia Streets but
is currently maintaining a very low profile.

Last week, several US occupation soldiers died in the Iraqi town of Khaldiya
in one of the fiercest resistance attacks to date. Witnesses reported seeing
several soldiers being evacuated from their badly burnt vehicles after a US
convoy came under attack as it passed
through the town on the way to Ramadi from Fallujah.
US soldiers courted further trouble in Iraq, killing an Iraqi teenager and
wounding four others in the flashpoint town of Fallujah. The soldiers opened
fire when their convoy drove near a house where a wedding was under way
and shots were being fired in the air in celebration. Fourteen-year old Sudian
Dawud was shot dead, and four people including two women were wounded
in the incident.
Only two Saturdays ago, the US military issued an apology after its soldiers
gunned down, a day earlier, nine Iraqi security guards in Fallujah, in one of
the worst instances of "friendly-fire". One US soldier was killed and three
others wounded in a retaliatory attack
in Fallujah, a day after the nine Iraqi guards were gunned down.

MEET THE DIRECTORS OF PLAN COLOMBIA & HIDDEN WARS OF
DESERT STORM
Gerard Ungerman & Audrey Brohy, of the acclaimed "Hidden Wars of Desert
Storm" & "Plan Colombia" (now showing at the Vancouver International Film
Festival)
Friday, 7 p.m., September 26th
St Andrew's Wesley Church, 1016 Nelson St., corner of Burrard.
$20 admission includes light refreshments.Program features talks by the two
directors and showings of their work.
The Coalition in Solidarity with the People of Iraq (CESAPI) is very honoured
to be able to host these two talented directors.
Hidden Wars of Desert Storm, since its release 3 years ago, has been an
enormously effective tool in raising awareness of the devastating impact that
the Gulf war, sanctions and depleted uranium have had on the people of Iraq.
It was chosen as one of the top ten best documentaries of the VIFF in 2000
and won several awards in Europe.
Plan Colombia is a very timely analysis of the 20-year war on drugs in
Colombia and the realities of what is known as "Plan Colombia". It points out
the role of Plan Colombia in subsidizing the US military industrial complex
through aid to the Colombian military, and addresses the central place of oil
and corporate globalization in the current violence.
Tickets are available in advance, or can be picked up at the door. For
advance tickets please call 604 737-1299 or email <iremac at shaw.ca>
CESAPI will donate proceeds from this reception to Gerard and Audrey to
help fund their current documentary which is based on the recent war and
occupation of Iraq.

MARCH TO OPPOSE OCCUPATIONS OF IRAQ, PALESTINE,
&AFGHANISTAN
Join the International Day of Action Rally and March in Vancouver to
oppose the
"Occupations of Iraq , Palestine, & Afghanistan"
Sunday, September 28th
Gather 1 p.m. at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Georgia St. side.
Rally with speakers, music and street theatre.
At the hands of 150,000 largely demoralized US troops, the Iraqi people are
subjected to arrest, detention, torture, house to house raids, checkpoints and
execution. Under US control, infrastructure, such as electricity and clean
water, has greatly deteriorated from pre-war conditions.
This year, the US announced their "Road Map" for peace, demanding that
Palestinians accept less than 20% of their original territory. Already under
the gun of restricted movement and constant harassment, 60% of
Palestinians live on less than $2 a day.
When the US switched its military focus to Iraq, the Canadian government
assisted by sending troops to 'tag them out' in Afghanistan. Unable to deliver
liberation, especially for women, as promised before the US invasion began,
violence is now escalating in Afghanistan, even as Canadian and US
governments call for the forced return of refugees.
Clearly these wars are not over - We must, therefore, continue to take to the
streets with our message for peace.
Organized by StopWar.ca, a Peace Coalition of over a 160 organizations and
grass-roots groups. For information or to join the coalition e-mail
<contact at stopwar.ca> or phone 604 737-1299 or 687 3223.

COMMERCIAL DRIVE AND BROADWAY
FRIDAY OCTOBER 10th, 4PM
SOLIDARITY
MASS SQUEEGEE PICKET (and thanksgiving dinner)
While the BC Liberals cut people off of welfare left, right and centre, they
have done nothing to repair the 8%+ unemployment rate. Some people are
forced to panhandle, beg or busk to make a living while other homeless
people work with a squeegee as a legitimate way to survive. But the
Vancouver Police Department has a policy of ticketing, jailing, and stealing
people's squeegee's. The City of Vancouver is already working on passing a
bylaw to prevent people from panning, busking or squeegeeing. Squeegee
kids are given numerous $86 tickets for 'jaywalking' at intersections, then
jailed when unable to pay the excessive fines. The squeegee youth can
stomach no more and have unionized with the Vancouver
Industrial Workers of the World branch. As unionized workers we will
struggle to have our rights respected.
We demand an end to the petty police harrasment of the poor. We demand
that the poor be given the right to make money on the street through
panning, busking, squeegeeing and flea marketing.
Join us for a mass squeegee & feast starting at an intersection the police
chased squeegee workers away from. Commercial and Broadway, Friday
October 10th, 4PM. Bring a squeegee if you can, some will be provided.
