Betty Krawczyk of Women in the Woods, will stand trial on Criminal Contempt
of Court charges for blocking Weyerhaeuser logging trucks in the Walbran
Valley last spring. She and Jen Bradley were arrested on May 8 and held
without charge for three weeks. They appeared before numerous judges who
kept reversing the decision between civil or criminal charges. Finally
they released them both without charge which defeated their purposes.
Another blockade was quickly set up wherein 8 women stopped logging in the
entire valley. The arrest came much more quickly this time, and off they went
to jail again. The intent is to defend based on the Canadian charter of rights
and freedoms - even though a contempt of court charge strips you of your
rights and doesn't really allow a defense. Cameron Ward is working pro bono
as the attorny, at some point however Betty may take over the defense
herself. She has extensive experience, from the civil rights movement in
the US to the Clayoqout and the Elaho. Jen Bradley pled guilty and was
released in early July. On July 8, justice Pitfield changed the wording of
the injunction to state that if they returned to the blockade they would be
arrested under the criminal code and not contempt of court charges. An
arrest under the criminal code would allow more room for a charter challenge
for defense and carry a criminal record. This may impact future arrests for
civil disobedience. Upping the ante shall we say?

Women in the Woods invites you to attend the court appearance and to make it as
public as possible. We are also launching a campaign to place native plants
with large dedication tags into public spaces. Dedications to a particular
day in jail spent by these women, or to some other female figure linked to the
earth and/or resistance movements.
