In July 2003, a number of Vancouver activists
formed the Vancouver chapter of the Free the
Cuban Five Committee. Part of the Committee
activities have included organizing events in
solidarity with the Cuban Five and with
organizers in the US. Since the formation of this

committee members have been able to collect
hundreds of signatures in defense of the Cuban
Five through petitioning in Vancouver. At the
“Plan Colombia” screening we will also screen a
short film featuring the story of the Cuban Five.

WHO ARE THE CUBAN FIVE?
They are political prisoners currently serving
time in the US for simply defending their country

of Cuba from terrorist acts by extremist
right-wing groups in Miami. They were sentenced
from 15 years to two life sentences.
They never harmed anyone, yet they are in prison
while the anti-Cuba extremists whom they tried to

stop are walking freely in Miami. The Cuban 5
monitored the terrorists’ actions and informed
Cuba of impending attacks by those extremist
groups.
The US government claimed they were engaged in
espionage on US military bases and threatened
“national security.” The espionage charge and
related charges are a complete fabrication. In
14,000 pages of transcript, no espionage evidence

was ever introduced.
The five Cubans were strictly involved in
monitoring the actions of terrorist right-wing
groups in Miami. For more than 40 years,
anti-Cuban right-wing groups in Miami have
engaged in countless terrorist activities against

Cuba including hotel bombings, biochemical
warfare and the planted bombing of a Cubana Air
flight. Those organizations were established with

the financing, training and backing of the CIA in

the early 1960s. Their sole aim was to sow terror

and violence against the people of Cuba after
they had successfully ousted hated dictator
Fulgencio Batista in 1959 and begun to build a
new society.
The trial of the Cuban Five, held in Miami with a

tainted jury, was a great mockery of justice.
Today over 150 “Free the Cuban Five” Committees
have sprung up the world over in solidarity with
the political prisoners and with the people of
Cuba.
