Palestine Solidarity Group Second Annual
Anti-Imperialist Conference: Mission Statement
The Palestine Solidarity Group will host its 2nd annual anti-
imperialist conference Sunday, May 25th. The gathering will be a
chance to analyze the current state of anti-imperialist struggles
worldwide and plan strategies for the coming period, in the context of
the continuing movement against the U.S. military occupation of Iraq.
The global movement against the war on Iraq was unprecedented in size and
coordination, with February 15th marking the largest
demonstration in human history. The movement's response to the
rapidly changing political situation is critical, and the conference aims
to provide a space for education and strategizing.
Elias Rashmawi, a member of the steering committee of the ANSWER
coalition, which organized the largest anti-war demonstrations in the
United States since the Vietnam War, will be in Vancouver to speak at the
conference. Rashmawi has also been active in leading
international anti-war efforts in his role as vice president of the
International Campaign Against US War on Iraq established in Cairo in
December 2002.
The spokespeople of U.S. imperialism continue to threaten military action
against Syria, Iran, North Korea, and other "regimes" they deign to
change. At the same time, ongoing interventions continue to escalate in
countries such as Colombia and the Philippines.
In Palestine, the U.S.-designed "road map" is but the latest
scheme that
aims to disarm and put an end to the heroic resistance of the Palestinian
people in their struggle against Israeli apartheid,
occupation, and for the right of return of refugees. The conference will
present an analysis of the state of these regional anti-
imperialist struggles, with an aim to building solidarity movements.
Resistance within Canada is another important aspect of the movement.
Under the pretext of the "war on terror", the Canadian government has
stepped-up attacks on democratic rights and increased repression
against refugees and immigrants. In addition to looking at the
struggles for civil liberties and for immigrant rights, we will
examine the history and present state of indigenous resistance to the
colonial settler state of Canada, another important aspect of the war at
home.
The Iraqi people are taking to the streets almost daily to demand U.S.
troops leave their country, exposing the lie that the war on Iraq was a
war for liberation. The conference aims to deepen our
understanding of imperialism and the many fronts of its attacks, in order
to sustain and build movements against future wars of
aggression and to build solidarity with the struggle against the
occupations of Iraq and Palestine.
