SFU Philosophers Cafe invites you to a special "Backstage Philosophers'
Café" as we discuss the themes raised in the play The Designated Mourner
currently being produced in Vancouver by independent theatre group Felix
Culpa. - See the play and talk about the issues ... talk about the issues
then see the play ...

Come to the Philosophers Cafe
Where? Grind and Gallery Café
4121 Main Street, Vancouver.
Admission $5

When? May 11, 7-9 pm

Topic? Witnessing and Mourning: What are the moral implications for those
who witness political violence and survive?

Join moderator Tom Sandborn for a special Philosophers' Cafe as we go
"back stage" for a dynamic discussion about themes and issues emerging
from this play.

Wallace Shawn's thoughtful and disturbing play explores one man's reaction
to a repressive and violent society, which is perhaps a nightmare
reflection of our own.

The Designated Mourner presents a dystopian vision of the world
reminiscent of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and the works of
George Orwell. And John Lahr, writing in The New Yorker, says it is "among
our generation's few great plays, one of the most memorable evenings of
theatregoing in my life."

Felix Culpa presents The Designated Mourner by Wallace Shawn, running at
Studio 16 from May 10-24, 2003. Cast includes David Bloom, Linda Quibell
and Charles Siegel. Directed by Norman Armour. For show details go to:

Moderator: Tom Sandborn is an activist and social critic. He has been the
regular moderator for SFU's Philosophers' Café at Bukowski's on Commercial
Drive for three years and is author of Joyride to Hell: Dispatches from
the Automobile Century.
