Indigenous Media Arts Group (IMAG) will present this Radical Rhizome
evening of independent media. The evening will include video,
speakers and acts of de-colonization that address the vital need for
media produced by indigenous communities for indigenous communities.
The discussion will include various forms of independent media
production, including print, (Red Wire Native Youth Magazine) and
radio.
Media activism is a vital force in stopping mainstream media
propaganda which is frequently stereotypical and biased against
indigenous rights and perspectives. Video footage of native activists
will be shown to illustrate how strategically important it is to have
access to media resources. Other examples of indigenous media will
also be presented. The evening will focus on the power of taking
control of our own images in film and video and venturing in to world
of new media.
Speakers will included members of the Indigenous Media Arts Group,
Redwire Native Youth Magazine, and guest speaker Keyway of the West
Coast Warriors who is presently in litigation of the protection of
the West Coast Fishery in defiance of DFO regulations.
Radical Rhizome is a series presented by Video In that explores the
merging of activist and experimental video. The series will present
work by artists and activists that are innovators in the development
of communication strategies for complex issues. Motivated by the
desire to instigate discussion, Radical Rhizome examines alternatives
to the simplification and polarization of issues common in mainstream
media.
