Subject: [APC-Discuss] Day of Democracy at UBC Tomorrow

Come and Join the Day of Democracy at UBC!
Friday, March 14, 2003
Starting at 7:00am at the gates
March at 11:30 through the campus
Rally at noon at the Goddess of the Democracy
(South of the SUB in front of Aquatic Centre, near the bus loop)

Today CUPE members at UBC shut down the entire campus in a "political
protest" (ie wildcat strike) because the BC Liberals took away their right
to strike. Yesterday the Liberal's passed Bill 21 which legislates CUPE
2950 (clerical and library workers) and CUPE 2278 (teacher's assistants)
back to work and appoints a Liberal-backed mediator.

CUPE 2278 has been on strike for the last month because they are looking
for compensation for rising tuition. In some cases tuition has gone up
over 60% since the Liberal's have been in power. TA's must pay tuition as
a condition of employment. CUPE 2950 has been on strike for the last week
because the UBC administration doesn't want to committ to pay equity and
is pushing to privatized some services on campus.

Tomorrow will be the second day that CUPE members are refusing to go back
to work. Everyone is welcome to come join the lines at the gates or the
rally at noon.
