No One Is Illegal - Vancouver Supports the Tent City
June 29, 2003

No One Is Illegal - Vancouver strongly supports the upcoming tent city
organized by the Anti-Poverty Committee (APC) and Housing Action Committee
(HAC). As an organization that fights for the rights of immigrants and
refugees in Vancouver we recognize that the struggle of the poor and the
homeless is also our struggle. We also acknowledge Vancouver as the
traditional territory of the indigenous Coast Salish people.

Some of the first tent cities in Vancouver were constructed by Native and
Chinese immigrant workers in the 1800's, between Pender Street and False
Creek. After 10 years the city of Vancouver destroyed their tents and
shacks, but by 1894 at least 380 tents and shacks had been rebuilt along
False Creek and the Burrard Inlet. During the Great Depression of the 1930's
there were hundreds of poor immigrant and Native workers living in four
major tent cities across Vancouver.

We call on all progressive organizations to rally behind the upcoming tent
city and the struggle for dignified housing for the poor.

Meet at Victory Square (Hastings and Cambie) at 6 pm on Wednesday, July 2nd.
Open the tent city!
