Black Mesa Water Coalition & The Indigenous Youth Coalition of Pinon present
the 2003 Youth Summit Healing and Redefining Our World
July 9-13, 2003,
The area known as Black Mesa has been the center of many environmental and
social injustices. These injustices are rooted in Federal Indian policies
and unsustainable energy development. The continued destruction of Diné and
Hopi traditional homelands is endangering the cultural survival of our
people and is largely contributing to the many challenges our youth face.
There is a great need to unify and empower young people. This July, Hopi and
Diné c ommunities will host the Healing and Redefining our World Youth
Summit on Black Mesa, within the community of Pinon. This Youth Summit will
bring together youth and elders from different communities to promote a
cross-cultural and cross-generational exchange, focusing on ideas of
sustainability, unity and hope.
BMWC agreed to host this regional youth summit while attending the
Indigenous Environmental Networks Indigenous Mining Summit, on the
Sakakogen Chippewa reservation in July 2002.
BMWC and IYCP envision a gathering that will bring together youth from all
walks of life to meet, share, learn, and find ways to unite and deal with
the many challenges that we face as global citizens.

"Love is profoundly political. Our deepest revolution will
come when we understand this truth. Only Love can
give us the strength to go forward in the midst of
heartbreak and misery. Only Love can give us the
power to reconcile, to redeem, the power to renew weary
spirits and save lost souls. The transformative power of
Love is the foundation of all meaningful social change."
