Open Letter to all Indigenous
Communities/Organizations in B.C.
Invitation to Rally to Oppose the F.N.G.A.
Chiefs, Community Members, Friends:
The Liberal government is ramming through the First
Nations Governance Act. The policies of the F.N.G.A.
are a recycling of the Liberal government's 1969 White
Paper and represent a concerted and desperate effort
to terminate our rights as Indigenous Peoples. The
F.N.G.A.:
* Attempts to define and limit our inherent right
of Self-Determination (including Governance) Rights;
* Further imposes a corporate/municipal government
structure on our communities (including on communities
who currently follow a hereditary system and have
never come under the Indian Act);
* Puts Indigenous Peoples in the position of
administering our own poverty, while not acknowledging
or respecting our Aboriginal Title or Rights;
* Terminates Canada's on-going fiduciary
obligations to our peoples;
* Is being unilaterally imposed on Indigenous
Peoples, without our Consent.
The F.N.G.A. is a deadly serious violation of our
inherent and constitutionally protected rights, and
must be stopped. However, Chretien is fanatically
determined to pass this legislation, and only a
mass display of our opposition can stop it. The
U.B.C.I.C. membership has been invited to join other
Indigenous Peoples in opposing this Act, in a rally
organized by the Indigenous Peoples Grassroots
Movement.
Please plan on traveling to be there to make our
collective opposition heard:
