Building Pride - Building Resistance

The theme for this year's Vancouver Pride is 'Building Pride'.  Queers 
United Against Kapitalism (QUAK) joins with other queers in building 
and celebrating pride, but also building and celebrating our resistance.

This year we kicked off Pride early with a poster and ad campaign 
against the BC Liberals and their homo henchman Lorne Mayencourt.  
Though Mayencourt is a gay man, he has stood by as his government has 
unleashed 2 years of attacks on both the queer community, and the 
broader population of the province.

While queers as a community have come a long way in the past few 
decades, we must never forget the struggle that got us where we are.  
Nor must we forget the struggles we are still engaged in.

There have been numerous recent incidents of gay bashings where the 
police proved to be more than useless.  We have a government and a gay 
MLA who march in our parade, while they cut our human rights, health 
care, and services for queer youth.  Enough is enough.

This year's parade 'marshal' is us, the queer community.  As the 
Vancouver Pride Society state in this year's guide, "I'm proud of you 
because you are courageous and willing to defend what is right and 
good.  I am proud of you because you are a strong individual with 
powerful convictions."

QUAK too is proud of the history of resistance and struggle waged by 
queers for justice. QUAK and other fed up queers will not stand by 
silently as our community comes under attack.  We call on all queers to 
find their way to "defend what is right and good" at this year's Pride.

Gay politicians and the police clearly aren't doing anything for our 
community.  It's time we build a community that is strong enough to 
demand more than later bar hours.  It's time we build a community that 
is strong enough to be free.
