Rally to Save the Pink Salmon
In BC's Broughton Archipelago at least seven unique runs of wild Pink Salmon face elimination because of sea lice infestations spread from farmed Atlantic Salmon aquaculture operations.
Pink Salmon runs in the Broughton area collapsed by 98 per cent last year from a 2001 high of 3.6 million fish to a meagre 147000. This is an environmental and economic disaster. Senior scientists have concluded that parasitic sea lice infestation spread by fish farms onto juvenile wild salmon is the plausable cause for the catastrophic crash. They recommend closing aquaculture salmon farms from mid-February to mid-June in order to ensure survival of wild juvenile salmon.
We Must Close the Salmon Farms NOW!
