Subject: Fw: NOON, FRI., FEB 14: ARTISTS PROTEST OLYMPICS, GRANVILLE ISLAND

...PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY...

The BILLIONAIRES FOR THE OLYMPICS
cordially invite you to join them on GRANVILLE ISLAND
12 NOON, FRIDAY FEBRUARY 14TH
as they help celebrate the opening of "CELEBRATION 2010",
an event that uses ART to SELL the Olympics!

The BILLIONAIRES will be arriving by LIMOUSINE
in front of
Emily Carr Institute for Art and Design, 1399 JOHNSTON STREET

We will then take part in the Public Dreams Community Parade, which
will wind its way from the giant crane next to ECIAD and then on to
the water park.

PUT ON YOUR FURS, YOUR SKI SUITS AND BALCLAVAS, OR COME AS YOU ARE!

"Let Them Eat Snow!"

********************************

"Billionaires for the Olympics" is a project of the Friends of Frida,
a group of artists dedicated to using art for protest and social
change. In 2002, Friends of Frida organized a street action and
protest that prevented Gordon Campbel from speaking at the VAG's
opening of the Kahlo/O'Keefe/Carr show. Friends of Frida operate
anonymously; each member takes the name of a dead woman artist they
admire.

JOIN THE BILLIONAIRES AT UPCOMING PRO-OLYMPIC EVENTS!

In a time of severe government cutbacks, Friends of Frida are
concerned that allocating arts funding through the Olympic bid is
part of a dangerous pattern, in which money that should be going to
arms-length arts funding is instead allocated via one-time-only
special events like Celebration 2010. We worry that such funding
operates as a 'band-aid solution': small amounts of money to arts
groups strapped for cash. It also implicates the arts community in an
event with potentially negative social impacts, and discourages
solidarity with
other concerned citiziens.
