STOP THE CUTS TO DISABILITY;
STATEMENT FROM OUST THE OLYMPICS
INFORMATION RELEASE, SAT. FEB 8th
RALLY, AND ACTION
Willow Park (12th and Willow)
2pm, Tuesday February 11th
OUT-O is against the 2010 Olympic Bid because of the huge cuts to social
programs in British Columbia. 14,000 people on Disability Level 2 are in
fear of being cut of the roll when the re-assessments are due March 15th.
We are on the brink of a human rights disaster. Many disabled people will
be told that they can work when they can't. Many are facing homelessness,
and there has been numerous suicides in the last month.
Oust the Olympics and No Games 2010 Coalition sent a pair of people up to
Whistler in January to inspect it for ourselves. The Bid Corp office in
Whistler had 10 posters outside that made many far fetched claims, we tore
them down and kept them. One of the posters was about the Paralympic
Games.
They made the claim that the Paralympic Games would promote accessibility
issues world wide. Is that Bid Corp Mayor Larry Campbell's vision for the
disabled in this province? When all the crippled people are on the street
hiding from the Vancouver Police Department, will the 2010 Paralympic
Games
will be a billion dollar voice speaking on their behalf? It is an
insulting
vision.
We call out to all people to join in solidarity with the Coalition to Stop
the Cuts to Disability when it protests the cuts February 11th. That
evening OUT-O will be bringing a motion to City Hall on behalf of the
disability community. Mayor Larry Campbell has shown great zeal in his
hunt
for the games while people in this province live in poverty and misery.
We
are going to demand that the city declare the situation to be an
emergency.
In this state of emergency there is only two things that the city can do.
It can demand that the province stop the DB reassessments, and it can stop
funding the Bid for the 2010 Paralympic Games.
COME FEB 11th, Show your solidarity with the disabled...
