Subject: FEB - Black History Month: Events Calendar

The following is a list of events planned to celebrate Black History
Month
this February:

February 3 ñ 7pm, Norm Theatre, UBC

Presenting two strong women from the Vancouver Black Community. Rosemary
Brown, former MLA, and first Black woman to be appointed to government in
Canada. Jeni LeGon, well known for her tap dancing abilities, was
featured
in Jeni LeGon: Living in a Great Big Way, a documentary on her life as a
Black performer in the 40ís and 50ís. She moved to Vancouver in 1969 and
has
been teaching dance here ever since. Both women are going to speak to
their
lives as Black women in this city.

The second part of the night presents the 3 top entries of a city-wide
highschool essay contest. The topic is ìThe Black contribution to BC.î
Winners will read their essay and receive their prizes.

February 4 ñ 7pm, Norm Theatre, UBC

Join us for an evening exploring interracial relationships and growing up
with mixed ethnicity. In dramatic prose, Lesley Ewen will share her
story
of being a brown skinned woman of Scottish and Jamaican heritage and her
process of finding and claiming a space for herself somewhere between
black
and white. Natasha Aruliah, a facilitator and mother of three bi-racial
children, will then guide a discussion exploring these issues. Together
they will create a safe and accepting space for others to share stories
of
their own.

February 8 ñ 8pm, Pit Pub, UBC

An exciting evening of local music talent bringing together the diverse
sounds of the African Diaspora. The event will be hosted by former Much
Music VJ Master T, and features such artists as Bounty Hunta, 333
Collective, Kia Kadiri, the Masabo Cultural Club, and more. The musical
range is impressive: from jazz to hip hop and rap, from latin afro-beats

dance-hall reggae, from soulful R&B to African drumming ñ and all
interspersed with poetry readings by more local talent. Definitely an
evening not to miss!
