This is a note to test to see if there is interest in a project that
has been long talked about in the east van activist community.
Over the years, the idea of putting together a regular women's radical
song circle has been proposed many times and it seems to me that there
are a lot of people who have expressed interest to me in that time. Up
until now I haven't really had any time to put into organizing it, but
i'm starting to feel more and more like it is something that i would
like to do. Today another friend (tammie tupchenko) expressed interest
in helping organize such a group.
Here's the idea:
rad women meet once every two weeks or once a month
they can be women who sing all the time, or who have never sung before
the group is relatively informal - anyone can show up or not for any
session
we learn songs that brighten our spirits when they are flagging and
contribute to the struggle
maybe we even form singing pickets for demonstrations and other events
(once we feel that is a possibility)
optimally - at least one of these rad women can play the guitar to help
with the singing - and maybe we even dare to add some other instruments
from time to time - but the focus is still mainly on singing
we recognize that group singing is a radical and united action and
building culture in our movements is an integral part of struggle.
If you are interested, and are of the girl persuasion (trans women
too!) - then please email me providing your:
name
phone number/email
preferred evening or weekend day that would work for you (incl. times)
any special needs - such as childcare or accessibility issues (if there
are enough people needing childcare, then maybe we could arrange a
group thing to facilitate the participation of everyone)
any other ideas that you might have about such a project.
for those of you who don't know me - i play and sing in the flying folk
army and have a large collection of radical music in book sand cds. i
love to sing in public though there doesn't seem to be enough
opportunities in every day life to do so :)
cheers,
megan
(email me offlist for my phone number to discuss further if you wish)
