A new film on Colombia/discussion on human rights around the world

Alex Neve, Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada, is the
keynote speaker for a "Real Security" teach-in taking place on Tuesday,
April 29, at Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings,
Vancouver. The 7 p.m. event will open with a new 25-minute film that
examines the continuing conflict in Colombia. There is no charge for
admission and everyone is welcome.

"Security must be about human rights. People simply are not secure unless
their basic human rights are scrupulously observed," says Neve.

"Our experience over four decades of human rights work is that we now live
in a world in which the basic human rights of millions of this planet's
citizens are ignored and violated cavalierly and cruelly on a daily basis.
That's the right to life, the right to be free from torture, it's the right
to be free from discrimination, the right to freedom of expression and many
other basic rights."

Neve, who recently returned from a research mission to Ivory Coast, will
address the current situation in Iraq and argue that real security can
never be obtained if human rights standards are compromised. He will also
draw attention to some of the forgotten corners of the world like Ivory
Coast and Colombia and elsewhere where insecurity reigns, human rights are
under siege, and the world does very little in response.

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people dedicated to the
protection and promotion of human rights.
