Vancouver International Film Festival to showcase film on Filipino
mail-order brides

The Philippine Women Centre of B.C. (PWC) announces the Vancouver-debut of
the documentary film “Say I Do” in this year’s Vancouver International Film
Festival.  The PWC congratulates Red Storm Productions for completing this
groundbreaking film.

As consultants to this project, the PWC offered its unique and rich
experience and insight on the significant presence of Filipino mail-order
brides in Canada.  The PWC sees this important documentary, exposing the
reality of trafficked Filipino women from the rural countrysides of the
Philippines to the isolated regions of Canada, as part of its continuing
effort to educate the public of the condition of Filipino women in Canada,
and advocate for the genuine equality and development of this group of
Filipino women.

In 2000, the PWC unveiled its historic year-long national research report on
the situation of Filipino mail-order brides, “Canada: the new frontier for
Filipino mail-order brides”.  The report gathered the stories of Filipino
mail-order brides throughout Canada, setting their stories and struggles
within the framework of globalization and government policies which have
fostered the boom in the trafficking of Filipino women worldwide.

With this year’s launching of “Say I Do”, PWC hopes the film will continue
to foster debate and discussion on the issue of trafficking of Filipino
women from the community-based perspective of marginalized Filipino women.
