POLICE ACTIONS SHAMEFUL
BC Liberal "Stormtroopers" Forcibly Remove Peaceful Protestors
VANCOUVER September 24/02 (pgs) - After a week of peaceful protest a group of squatters occupying the old Woodward's store on Hastings were violently arrested and dragged off to jail. The group consisting mainly of streetpeople and homelessness have been calling for the BC Liberals to honour previous commitments to build low-income housing in the downtown eastside. Donations of food, tents, beds, sleeping-bags from the general public which have been rolling in all week to assist the rebels were unceremoniously thrown into garbage trucks and taken away, which begs the question....who gave the police the authority to destroy protestor's possessions. Apparently the Non-Partisan Association (NPA) has shown its true feeling for the BC Liberals agenda by ordering the city police to attack these defenseless people, Jennifer Clarke, NPA mayoral candidate was unavailable for comment. On the other hand George Abbott, BC Liberal Cabinet Minister chuckled with glee over the result of the police action, encouraging the Vancouver Police to remove the squatters from the sidewalk surrounding the Woodward's site although the province has no jurisdiction. No sooner were the protestors removed from around the building and their possessions thrown out again, they returned to continue the fight. There has been a call for support of the Woodward's Squatters, more donations are needed, and a major rally has been called for Tuesday Sept 24 at 6PM at Hastings and Abbot. The struggle continues.....
