WOODWARD'S: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
By now, most of you know that the woodward's squat was broken up
forcefully by the police at dawn today - 27 people were arrested and
faced release hearings today (which are still going on). There will be
more info released later in the afternoon on the status of those arrested
and battles ahead.
What to do next? Come down and participate in making decisions and taking
further action around the Woodward's squat, and social housing in the
Downtown Eastside!
TODAY (SATURDAY)
* VANDU has called a meeting at the Carnegie Centre to discuss next steps
for action around Woodward's and the fight for dtes housing. The meeting
starts at 2:00 - which is right away!
TOMORROW (SUNDAY)
* Come down on Sunday the 22nd for a COMMUNITY PICNIC between 1 at 3 pm.
It's a potluck protest in support of the people reclaiming housing space
in the Downtown Eastside and a show of community resistance against the
brutal actions of the police.
The demands from the WOODWARDS SQUAT still stand:
1. Develop Woodward's into social housing immediately.
2. Reverse the cuts to social housing and all social services.
3. Draft a civic anti-vacancy by-law to seize and convert empty
buildings into social housing.
4. Full disclosure of all information regarding the proposed sale and
development of Woodward's.
5. Decent and dignified immediate shelter for all homeless squatters
asked to leave the building.
