[van-announce] Petition against the Vancouver Olympic Bid

Hello Friends,

Attached is the formal petition to the International Olympic Committe
(IOC) to NOT consider Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Games.  We urge you
to assist in circulating the petition as widely as possible via social
justice coalitions, labour unions, watchdog agencies, etc.

Our goal is to approach the IOC during their visit to Vancouver in
February, and provide them with signed petitions as a show that the
taxpayers of BC do not want their tax dollars spent on this event at this
time.  We will not be approaching the Liberals or the Bid Corp, as they
have proven that they will not listen to the public.

As you are aware, the BC Liberal government has drastically cut funding to
many necessary social, health and education programs and services.

So far, Campbell's government has spent 9.1 million on the bid alone, and
has pledged further billions of taxpayers’ dollars for the Olympic 2 week
event. Threats to the Lower Mainland watershed, displacement of already
marginalized people in Vancouver and absurd Hwy 99 construction costs will
be reality if Vancouver is chosen.

Please post the petition widely in your communities and mail them to the
