For immediate release
September 16, 2002

Event series features women’s struggles from the Americas, Asia and the
Middle East

(Vancouver, Canada) – Ericka Zamora, a former political prisoner from
Mexico, will join Tania Willard of Redwire Urban Native Youth Media and
Rachel Rosen of Grassroots Women in a panel discussion offering an
insightful and inspiring look at the role of women in the struggle against
globalization and war. Being held at 7pm on September 23, 2002, at the SFU
Harbour Centre, the “Regional Feature Night” will be the first in a series
highlighting current struggles of the Americas, Asia and the Middle East.

Ericka Zamora was a university student and activist at the National
Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She was a political prisoner for
four years after having survived the massacre of El Charco in 1998, where 11
campesino people were assassinated by the Mexican army. Since Zamora was
released from prison three months after much political pressure, she has
been active in speaking out against torture and the inhuman and continuous
human rights violations of politician prisoners. She will speak about the
struggle of women in Mexico for social and national liberation.

Tania Willard is a member of the Secwepemc Nation and the editor of Redwire
Urban Native Youth Media. Willard recently returned from the International
Indigenous Youth Conference in the Philippines where Redwire made a
commitment to developing an international magazine for indigenous youth to
share experiences and learn from each other.

Rachel Rosen is a member of Grassroots Women, an organization of
marginalized and working class women which is hosting the biweekly “Regional
Feature Nights” about imperialism, war, fundamentalism and women’s
resistance. They are part of the build up “Towards Our Liberation: An
International Women’s Conference Against Imperialist War and Plunder”
scheduled for November 1-4, 2002. This international women’s conference will
bring women together from around the world to share their stories and
struggles about war and develop strategies for united action.

All are welcome to attend the “Regional Feature Nights” being held at SFU
Harbour Centre at 515 West Hastings from 7-9:30 pm. Entrance is by donation.
