Radical Rhizome is a new series presented by Video In that will
explore the merging of activist and experimental video. The series
will present work by artists and activists that are innovators in the
development of communication strategies for complex issues. Motivated
by the desire to instigate discussion, Radical Rhizome will examine
alternatives to the simplification and polarization of issues
common in mainstream media.

creative resistance, the first screening in the series, will present
local and international works from the last three decades that speak
to issues through means that create ample space for the viewers to
interpretation. Through their use of visual language the videomakers
give the audience the opportunity to be creative in the formation of
their understanding of the work. In Popsicles, Gloria Camiruaga
(1984, Chile/USA) simultaneously addresses wonder and violence in the
culture in which she lives by intertwining children, sacred song, war
toys and popsicles. Straight Jacket by Kate Craig (1980, Canada)
looks at the ups and downs of femininity as a luxurious pink satin
straight jacket. Bad Hair Day by Meesoo Lee (2001, Canada), uses a
personal encounter with his family over acceptable hair do's to
investigate cultural difference and social norms. An excellent
evening for anyone interested in alternative media and social change.
