Political Prisoners of Neoliberalism
"Torture is widespread and demands urgent action to eliminate it." -Amnesty International
An afternoon of political education on the present situation of human rights and political prisoners in Mexico as an effect of Neoliberalism. (Free admission).
Presentations by:
* Dr. Gerardo Otero: Senior lecturer at Simon Fraser University in the Latin American Studies department. Editor of Neoliberalism Revisited: Economic Restructuring and Mexicos Political Future (Westview 1996), and author of Farewell to the Peasantry? Political Class Formation in Rural Mexico (Westview 1999). He will give an introduction to the socioeconomic situation of Mexico and the effects of Neoliberalism.
* Rene Lobato, (Guest Speaker from Mexico) the Secretary of Human Rights of the National Executive Committee of the Mexican Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) will explore the current human rights situation in Mexico and provide some ideas on what Mexico needs from the international community.
* Julio Cesar Hernandez (Guest Speaker from Mexico), will explain what is currently happening at the Mexican congress and their discussion about the introduction of a federal amnesty law for all political prisoners.
* Emiliano Velasco, from the Group of Relatives and Friends of Political Prisoners, and member of the delegation that visited Mexico during the last week of August to assess the situation of human rights and to hear the testimonies of more than 50 political prisoners, former political prisoners and their relatives, will give a report on the conclusions of the delegation and will explain more in detail the feelings of the Mexican people and what it's being done in Mexico for the release of all political prisoners.
* Ericka Zamora, (Guest Speaker from Mexico) a university student from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) who was a political prisoner for four years after having survived the massacre of El Charco in 1998, where 11 campesino people were assassinated by the Mexican army and after being tortured and subjected to inhuman and continuous Human Rights violations, will give her testimony and will speak about the current national campaign to release all political prisoners, in which she has been very active since her release three months ago after she was on a hunger strike.
* A member of Amnesty International Vancouver will finalize the conference by speaking on which international agreements Mexico is violating and their recommendations for responding to this.
There will be a discussion period after the presentations.
When: Saturday September 21st, 2002
Time: 1:30pm - 5:30pm
