APOLOGIES FOR MULTIPLE POSTINGS. Please pass this on.

For a number of reasons, there hasn't been any publicity yet about
a forthcoming talk by Marta Harnecker at SFU Harbour Centre on 9 September
at 6:30 or 7 (this will be clarified shortly). The talk is being sponsored
by the Latin American Studies Programme of SFU and will likely focus on her
just-completed book on Venezuelan events (based upon extensive interviews
with Chavez) and her book on the Landless Movement in Brazil (published in
April).
Marta Harnecker, a Chilean who was a student of Louis Althusser,
edited the weekly magazine Chile Today during the period of the Popular
Unity under Allende in Chile and has lived in Cuba since 1973. She has
published about fifty books and is known widely among Latin American
militants for her book, "The Elemental Concepts of Historical Materialism",
a book published by XXI Century (Siglo XXI) with 62 editions, and more than
one million copies sold in the Spanish speaking world, which introduced
many militants to Marx. During the last few years, she has worked on the
national liberation movements, and also on the experiences the Latin
American left has had by using the institutional route in Brazil, Venezuela
and Uruguay, considering the experiences of local governments of popular
participation of the PT (Workers Party) in Brazil, those of ex CausaR (R
Cause) in Venezuela and the Frente Amplio (United Front) in Uruguay as well
as a series of books on Cuban community experiences.
So, mark this one in your calendar and watch for further notices.
                 in solidarity,
                          mike
