Sto:Loh Nation author and activist Lee Maracle to address international
women's conference
(Vancouver, Canada) -- Delegates to Towards Our Liberation, an imminent
international womens conference on war and aggression, will have the unique
opportunity to attend a keynote address given by Lee Maracle, member of the
Sto:Loh Nation. Based on her experiences as an author and activist, Maracle
will address the historical and contemporary struggle against war and
imperialism with particular regard for Indigenous women.
The enemy of women (and men) is imperialism, states Maracle in an
article printed in Our Lives. "This system of financial enslavement that
organizes and re-organizes the world is beset with financial chaos,
recession, and political rebellion. None escape the web of this voracious
spider."
Maracle is the author of numerous books including I Am Woman, Sundogs, and
Ravensong and her recent novels critically acclaimed Daughters are Forever
and Will' s Garden. She has contributed to a wide range of anthologies and
journals including the award winning the award winning First Fish First
People, Returning the Gaze, and co-edited a number of works including the
award winning My Home As I remember. [Lee Maracle] She was recently the
recipient of the JT Stewart writing award.
As a gifted instructor and orator, Maracle has been awarded the Anne
Decker guest professorship, the University of Toronto teaching award, and is
currently the Distinguished Visiting Professor of the Canadian Culture Chair
At Western Washington University.
"We, I, we will take on the struggle for self-determination and in so
doing, will lay the foundation, the brick that you can build on in undoing
the mess we are all in," states Maracle's character in Bobbi Lee, Indian
Rebel.
Towards our Liberation will take place in Vancouver, Canada, from
November 1-4, 2002. GABRIELA-Philippines and Grassroots Women the
conference conveners urge women to register for the conference.
"Towards our Liberation is an opportunity to learn from the speakers and
participants who represent mass organizations from around the world and to
join with women in building an international, anti-imperialist womens
movement," states Beth Grayer, a member of Grassroots Women.
Information about the conference, including registration details, is
available at http://grassrootswomen.tripod.com or by calling 604.215.1905.
