Pivot Legal Society is being swamped with demands
on its
resources, and needs your help!
Pivot Legal Society is dedicated to advancing the
interests of
marginalized persons through legal education, law
reform, and strategic
legal advocacy. We rely heavily upon the
efforts of skilled and
dedicated volunteers, both in order to deal with
tight economic times,
and to enable us to deal with exceptional demands
on our services.
However, recent developments have overwhelmed us,
and we need to grow
quickly to deal with new demand.
We are looking for skilled people willing to join
our dedicated and
talented team of volunteers. We need people
with a variety of
skills and experience.

Lawyers for Woodwards protestors -
urgent
Pivot needs lawyers to work as part of a legal
team to support
the Woodwards protestors.
Projected casework includes: defending and
appealing the injunction,
counter-claiming for destroyed property, and the
laying of police
complaints. Civil litigation or courtroom
experience is valuable, but not
necessary. A variety of roles and levels of
commitment are
available, from research, administrative support,
to courtroom
work.
Commitment: variable
Lawyers for Affidavit Campaign
Pivot needs lawyers to work with legal volunteers
in collecting and
commissioning affidavits from marginalized and
homeless people in the
Dowtown Eastside. Pivot affidavits are
aimed at documenting
instances of systematic discrimination and abuse
in order to create an
evidentiary foundation for strategic legal
action. Warm business attire
and portable computers an asset.
Commitment: two to four evenings per month
Lawyers for Sex Trade Workers
Pivot needs lawyers to work to help sex trade
workers in a variety of
areas, including criminal defence, pro bono legal
advice, and access to
justice. Female lawyers please.
Commitment: two to four evenings per month
SKILLED VOLUNTEERS
Fundraisers - urgent
Pivot needs enthusiastic fundraisers to help it
gain the legal
resources it needs to take on some of society’s
toughest issues. To
date, $10,000 in cash donations has been
leveraged into more than
$100,000 worth of volunteer time. The major
barrier now facing us –
that of turning $100,000 cash into $1,000,000
worth of volunteer time -
is the lack of cash, not volunteers.
Successful fundraising efforts
here will have profound effects on the growth and
effectiveness of our
organization. Fundraisers will join our
newly formed fundraising
team to coordinate:
• special
event
planning
• soliciting
donations of services and equipment from the
private sector
• writing
grant
and foundation proposals
• developing
a
network of supporters and contributors
Commitment: variable.
Multi-Media Professionals
Pivot needs talented and motivated graphic
designers, layout artists,
photographers and media technicians to join our
dynamic and growing
project-oriented team. You will work
together with like-minded
volunteers on:
• cards,
cards,
and other grassroots legal education publications
• promotional
materials, including a promotional video
• power-point
presentations
Commitment: variable, depending upon project,
role, and personal
availability.
Writers and Editors
Pivot needs skilled writers to assist in its
efforts to improve the lives
of marginalized persons through public education
and
advocacy. We need people willing to take on
specific writing
projects such as:
• media
advocacy,
through op-eds and letters to editors
• writing
and
editing educational materials
Legal or journalism experience is an asset.
Commitment: variable.
Website Developers
Pivot needs web developers with a range of
talents and abilities to join
our newly formed website development team, and to
assist in the
programming and maintenance of our new website to
be launched this
October.
Commitment: variable
Accountant
Pivot needs the support of a trained accountant
to assist our
treasurer with bookkeeping and
receipts. This role would also
involve assisting in the creation of a
monthly-giving donor plan.
Commitment: 3-5 hours per week.
COORDINATORS
Pivot is highly dependent on the donated efforts
of
volunteers. However, in order to utilize
those efforts effectively,
we need organizers with skills in projects
management and volunteer
coordination. Those considering
volunteering for a coordinator
position should view the position as a serious
time commitment, upon
which the efforts of many other volunteers
depend. People chosen to
fill these positions will join our team of highly
talented and dedicated
volunteer organizers.
Rights Card Project Coordinator -
urgent
We need someone with experience in project
management to
oversee coordination of our Rights Card
Project. This project
allows non-profit organizations to sponsor the
production of, and place
their logo on, the Pivot Rights Card.
However, we have been
completely swamped by demand, including requests
from across the
country. We need someone who can:
• act as
liason
between customers, our graphic designer, and our
printer
• track
production, billing and distribution
• coordinate
translations
• oversee
initiatives aimed at attracting new sponsors
Commitment: 5 – 10 hours per week.
Legal Research Coordinator
Pivot needs someone with experience in legal
research to coordinate our
team of volunteer legal researchers. We
need someone who can
oversee:
• distributing
legal research to volunteers
• follow-up
and
evaluation of research
• liasing
with
website developer
• organizing
a
database of legal research
Commitment: 5 – 10 hours per week.
Publications Coordinator
Pivot need someone with project management and
publishing experience to
coordinate the efforts of an extremely talented
team of graphic
designers, layout artists, and writers.
Duties include
• overseeing
the
production of promotional and educational
materials
• providing
feedback and direction to volunteers
• liasing
with
website volunteers
Commitment: about 10 hours per week.
Volunteer Coordinator -
urgent
Pivot needs someone with experience in personnel
management or
volunteer organizing to assist Pivot executive
director John Richardson
in the administration of our growing staff of
volunteers.
• identifying
needs and drafting volunteer job descriptions
• recruitment
of
volunteers
• maintaining
database of volunteers
• providing
opportunities for volunteer feedback and
evaluation
Commitment: about 10 hours per week.
