Rally at the Mexican Consulate!!

After a 2-months-long hunger strike, Jacobo Silva and Gloria Arenas, political prisoners of Mexico, face a renewed hope in their struggle for justice.   The double discourse of the Mexican president Vicente Fox has been disclosed.  The strike proved the existence of social activists unjustly incarcerated and the serious human rights violations that continue to be the norm in Mexico.   However, it is very important to continue pressuring the government so that the juncture opened by the prisoners’ strike is not lost.

On August 9th the Mexican authorities are going to present the conclusion of the judicial process of Jacobo Silva, Gloria Arenas, Fernando Gatica and Felicitas Padilla.   Their process is based entirely on fabricated evidence obtained under torture.  When the prisoners were being tortured, they were forced to sign blank papers, which were later presented as self-incriminatory declarations.   The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions has stated that the arrests and detentions of these four prisoners were arbitrary.  

On Wednesday July 17th, 2002, at 12:00noon, we are going to go to the Mexican consulate, on 1177 West Hastings, to hand a letter to the Mexican government, asking them to respect the many international human rights agreements it has signed.   We will demand that they amend the many irregularities that have characterized this case and do not use the evidence obtained under torture and release the political prisoners.

Before we hand in the letter, there will be an exhibition of the art done by the political prisoners.  There will be poetry and music as well.

Come and support the struggle for the just release of all political prisoners in Mexico! “The hunger strike has been stopped but the struggle continues…”
