The Anti-Poverty Committee is holding a film night fundraiser this Thursday,
August 15th. This event features Finally Got the News, a documentary about
the League of Revolutonary Black Workers. The League formed in the late 60s
because of the treacherous conditions that existed for black workers in the
auto factories of Detroit. In the words of Manning Marable, the League was
"in many respects the most significant expression of black radical thought
and activism in the 1960s.At a time when even reactionary politicians such
as Richard Nixon were embracing the slogan "Black Power", the League
represented a militant black perspective calling for the fundamental
socialist transformation of US society." This documentary was made by the
League itself through Black Star Productions.
The movie will start at 8 PM, followed by a speaker who will give some
background about the League and tie its work into the present situation.
Beverages will be served, there will be music, and the event is
kid-friendly.
Advance tickets are available at Spartacus Books (311 W. Hastings), or by
calling (604)779-7430.
