Women activists to converge in Vancouver for international conference

(Vancouver, Canada) Women from Middle Eastern, Asian, and South American
organizations have been invited to speak at an upcoming international
conference about war and imperialism called Towards our Liberation.

Being convened by GABRIELA-Philippines and Grassroots Women (Vancouver),
under the auspices of the International League of People's Struggles, the
conference seeks to address the intensifying world wide economic and
political crisis, exacerbated by increasing militarization and war. It will
be held in Vancouver, Canada, from November 1-4, 2002.

"As the atmosphere of hysteria is being heightened by the US-led war
machine, it is women - especially those in the Third World - who are feeling
the constricting grip of imperialism," comments Rachel Rosen, a member of
Grassroots Women. "The speakers at Towards our Liberation will highlight not
only the impact of imperialism, war, and fundamentalism on women in their
country, but also the critical and historic role women can play in the
struggle for change."

Speakers that have been invited to to present at the conference represent
organizations including:

  a.. Women’s Emancipation Organization, Bangladesh, an anti-imperialist
women’s organization struggling for women’s rights in general and
particularly for the rights of working women.
b.. CEBRASPO, or the Brazilian Centre in Solidarity with the People, an
anti-imperialist group
c.. People Shelter Movement, Indonesia, a member of the International
Coordinating Committee of the International League of People’s Struggles
d.. Women Working Organization, Pakistan, which works for the recognition,
protection and promotion of Women Workers Rights
"For women from industrialized countries like Canada, the conference offers
us the opportunity to learn from the experiences of Third World women in
their militant struggle for social and national liberation," explains Beth
Grayer of Grassroots Women. "For all marginalized women, the conference is
an important step in building and strengthening a militant, international
women's movement."
