To our most dearest internet friends,

The new semester has finally begun and we're off to a pretty exciting year at überculture. You may have seen us on Wednesday at the CSU's tabling fair, or remember us from previous adventures. Either way, for those who are getting this message for the first time, welcome to our handy listserv! We promise not to spam you, collect your personal information, or forward those horrible chain letters you probably get from your grandma anyway.

In this email, you'll find:
1. Top-secret info about our orientation meeting (hint: you're invited!)
2. Even more top-secret coordinates for an upcoming public space intervention
3. A plug for our friends at QPIRG
4. Who are these people, anyway?

So, without further ado...

1. Top-secret info about our orientation meeting (hint: you're invited!)

Absolutely everyone reading this message (and their friends, lovers, acquaintances and enemies) are welcome to join us for our first get-together of the semester. Don't worry about showing up alone, you'll make friends. If you're not sure who we are but signed up for our list somehow, scroll down to point 4 of this email. We'll do introductions, have a coffee/drinks, and plan for this semester's merry misadventures. Party's on.

Mark your calendars:
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH
@ BURRITOVILLE (on Bishop, in between Maisonneuve and Sherbrooke)*
SIX PM, SHARP!

RSVP not required, but try to send an email to uberculture at csu.qc.ca if possible so we have a better guess of how many tables we'll need.

We will also likely be having regular meetings every Monday at 6 downtown from now on. If this conflicts with your class schedule and you're serious about getting involved weekly, PLEASE send an email to uberculture at csu.qc.ca and we'll see what we can sort out.

(*Burritoville is vegan/vegetarian friendly. However, it is NOT wheelchair-accessible and if this poses an issue for you or a friend you'd like to invite, don't hesitate to contact us -- we will change the location.)

2. Even more top-secret coordinates for an upcoming public space intervention

We have it on very good authority that some folks will be sitting down for a cup of tea in the lobby of the Hall Building at about noon sharp on Thursday the 16th.

Obviously, this is not an "event" because then it would then have to be booked officially through Concordia, but we have *heard* that people will be there, and that they're extremely friendly folk who would probably love if you joined them. But that's just a rumour, you know.

3. A plug for our friends at QPIRG Concordia

GO TO ALTERNATIVE ORIENTATION! All the cool kids are doing it. Learn more here: http://qpirgconcordia.org/disorientation/

4. Who are these people, anyway?

If you haven't figured out what überculture is and are a little confused by this email, the blurb we give to publications usually reads like this:

"überculture is an organization of culture jammers, pranksters, artists and activists, who are deeply committed to the promotion of free and public expression (particularly on campus and within the realm of student space). At the intersection of art and activism, überculture’s primary objective is to resist the commercialization of the public sphere—while working to provide innovative alternatives, progressive campaigns, and a space to (re)create."

In other words, we are a collective of creative folk who are interested in social justice organizing. You don't need to have any particular skills to participate, but a love of spontaneity, free culture, and political action (and a bit of a problem with authority) will definitely help. überculture is also an inclusive group: we really want to encourage people from traditionally marginalized communities to get involved.

Some things we're doing in the fairly immediate future include a major expansion of the Really Really Free Market (clothing swap etc.) project, a public art installation involving bottled water in collaboration with TapThirst, and a bit of radical indoor busking. You know you want in.

Questions? Concerns? Thoughts? Don't be afraid to get in touch. Otherwise, s ee you on Monday!
