Hey übergang
Since lots of people have conflicting schedules with our meetings, we have started taking minutes, YAY!!!!
This means we can now send out updates so people can stay involved and see that we are still doing super fun things.
This weeks meeting was on Tuesday because Concordia was closed on Monday.
(The following is by topic so you can read the whole shebang or pick and choose)
BOTTLED WATER PROJECT
Next week on October 20th is NATIONAL CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY DAY. To recognize this day, überculture is getting together with the QPIRG working group Tap Thirst.
THE PLAN: is to collect all the water bottles on campus on Monday 18 after the überculture meeting, then on the 20th, dump the bottles in the Concordia square corner Guy and de Maisonneuve.
WE NEED YOUR HELP collecting the bottles, on Monday around 6/6:30 we will be walking around the downtown campus collecting ALL the bottles we find. If you want to help but don't have time on Monday, Tap Thirst will also be doing a collection of bottles on the Tuesday, so you can contact them directly if you have time on Tuesday.
ON WEDNESDAY: the plan is to meet on the steps of 2020 Mackey (the überculture office) at 8AM . Then around 8:30AM we will walk over the the square and bag by bag dump the bottles in a pile.
"But then it just looks like a pile of garbage…" you might be asking. Yes, and that is the point. This is a public art installation but also an eyesore.
Along with Tap Thirst we are making a point about waste and consumption, we are hoping to collect roughly 300-400 bottles.
WE NEED MORE HELP with this event. Because we are dumping garbage on the street we will need as many people as possible to help with containing the art piece so if, and when the cops come we can prove to them it is both art and easy to clean up after ourselves. We will also be needing people to start a discourse with people, talk to passers by and picture takers about why we are doing this, we will also have propaganda to hand out.
REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET / OCTOBER 21
We had planned to have another Really Really Free Market on October 21, UNFORTUNATELY the space we normally book for this event has already been booked. So what to do?
In the überculture meeting we had thrown around the idea of starting out bathroom student ad art direct action campaign . This would involved getting as many students as possible to create original pieces of art on material the exact size of bathroom ads. Later these ads would mysteriously appear in the bathroom stall ads instead of advertisements. We are looking into a location to have this event and working out the dimension, so stay tuned so you can create your own masterpiece.
We will also be looking into maybe sharing the location with a small scale Really Really Free Market , so send an email to uberculture at csu.qc.ca if you are down with having another market, this way we can see if we get a lot of support for it we will do it and if not we will wait till next month.
ALSO
Interestingly this was sent to us
A group at Concordia will be hosting a round table discussion on Canada’s food policy on behalf of The People’s Food Policy on Thursday October 21, 2010 from 2:30-4:40 on the 7th floor of the Hall Building .
What’s Your Food Policy?
What we collectively eat - our food culture - has a huge impact on what is farmed, made and sold in our country and around the world. At the same time, government policies, laws, programs and subsidies dictate life for farmers and consumers and shape the business landscape against which food is grown, altered, and eaten. Join us for a discussion about your own food policies, tell us what you eat and why? How much do you about the foods you eat? What would you like to see changed? We want to hear from you! Come and contribute your ideas for Canada’s first comprehensive food sovereignty policy. The event will be facilitated by Cameron Stiff Location: SGW Campus, Room H - CSU 7th Floor Henry F. Hall Building 1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W.

So there are many option of what to do on October 21.
NEXT MEETING / BUY NOTHING WEEK PLANS
We really hope everyone can make it to the next meeting on Monday October 18 because its going to be SUPER FUN!!!
At the meeting we will start planning what to do for BUY NOTHING WEEK. Buy Nothing Day is an event that happens in November but because we love it so much we are going to dedicate a whole week to it (Nov. 22 - 27) . We have already booked the Really Really Free Market location for 2 whole days, but we need your ideas.
Do you or someone you know want to host a workshop?
Do you have ideas for direct action campaigns?
Do you want to organize a Flash Mob or Guerilla Theatre performance?
We are also looking into booking a bar for überculture's Speak Easy to wrap up the week.
Do you know people who would like to perform, write poetry, do spoken work, rap, sing, mime, dance?????
So come to the meeting or drop us a line with your ideas.
MISCELLANEOUS
Do you have an hour to kill some time during the week and don't know what to do?
For the past couple weeks überculture members could be spotted in the Mezz giving FREE ADVISE . It's really easy, all you do is sit at one of the tables, write "Free Advise" on a piece of paper, or on your computer screen so people can see it, and start talking with people, it's really really fun, I promise!
If that's not your sort of thing, we always need help with our web presence, if you are a Facebook junky (no judging here, we all are) spend 15 minutes inviting your friends to join überculture's Facebook page .
Do you have classes at Loyola ? We don't really ever make it out to Loyola campus which is a shame because there are so many cool departments there. So if you want to bring free advise to Loyola that would be AMAZING!! You could set up in the G lounge, or the Hive, or the cafe in the CJ building or the SP building. Wanna stage a performance in the Cafeteria? Wanna get the Rez kids involved???
Well that's all from me this is getting long, hope to see as many of you as possible on Monday!
Nicola and the übercrew
