überculture update 10.27.09

Hello friends and dissidents!

Before you do anything else, we encourage you to waste five minutes with The Corporate Bullshit Generator . Good. We thought you'd like it. Now to (un)business.

Given everyone's general availabilities, it looks like meetings will be happening at least once a week on Mondays at 4:30 in the Hall Building Java U from now on . If you can't make it during that time, it doesn't mean you can't participate! There are plenty of rad events coming up and we're bound to have lots of planning sessions that fall outside of that time.

We are bringing back an überculture classic and having a tea-in .
What's a tea-in, you say? Well, it's like a sit-in, in that it is a non-violent occupation/reclaimation of public space. The only difference is that you also drink tea. Why? Because tea is the ideal beverage for sharing -- stories, questions, political ideas, poetry, you name it--it's a fact. So a tea-in is designed to do two things: it is a tactic that challenges traditional (boring, oppressive, creatively stifling) interaction with public space as well as simultaneously engages folks in creative, positive, unstructured dialogue...often with perfect strangers. In other words, a little bit of magic during midterms.

so our tea-in will be right in front of H-110 at 2pm sharp on Thursday November 5th. It is imperative that you bring a mug!

We are also tabling , with a twist.
We're in the process of booking tabling space the week of November 9th. The CSU has got this funny booking policy where you can only table twice a week, and a maximum of four times a month, so the two times we've settled on are Monday the 9th from 10-1 and Thursday the 12th from 11-4. ...but you may see us around a little more frequently than that. We'll be offering free advice on just about everything you'd ever want to know -- no question is too strange, personal, or silly. We'll be challenging the cult of the "expert," having heart-to-hearts with fellow students, and will probably get a few laughs. As usual, we'll also have the tools on hand to cut up your credit card, free chalk for all, and plenty of agitprop to go around.

Some things to keep on the back burner:

- Buy Nothing Day is at the end of November and it's going to be a blast. We're planning a clothing swap as part of the no-growth economic festivities, so start sorting through your closet now!

- We still have copies of School Schmool , the radical/alternative organizer and agenda planner. There's a 2$ suggested donation, but we can give them away free too.

- If you're interested in organizing a workshop on urban art, we're thinking of doing a series for the Spring semester -- wheatpasting, stenciling, silkscreening, whatever. Let us know! Skills are for sharing.

Finally, a shout-out to the folks at the 2110 Centre for Gender Advocacy -- who are having an extremely important Special General Meeting that everyone should attend on November 2nd at 6pm in EV 1.605.
